CAPTAIN SPACEBOY, also known as SPACE BOYFRIEND, is a character in OMORI. He is the leader of the SPACE PIRATES that traverse the galaxies of HEADSPACE and a major antagonist for the PROLOGUE segment of the game.
PROFILE
APPEARANCE
CAPT. SPACEBOY is a young man with blue skin, light-blue fingernails, and pinkish-red hair. His main outfit consists of a green jacket, two yellow knobs with spikes pointing sideways, and two black shoulder pads on both shoulders. He notably possess a blue-colored headband with an yellow oval-shaped orb in the center. In addition, CAPT. SPACEBOY dons a long yellow cape with a yellow star on its back and long black pants. He also possesses a green-colored space gun that shoots out laser beams and is used to fight against any opponent he encounters.
As SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND, his appearance drastically changes from his original self whenever he undergoes a temporary mood swing. He now has greenish hair, a pink-colored jacket, and a black eye patch covering his right eye. His eyes are now red with black pupils, along with his headband's orb altered into a yellow diamond. His cape's color also changes from yellow to green. The left side of his chest is bandaged due to SWEETHEART breaking his heart after their breakup.
CAPT. SPACEBOY's appearance in HEADSPACE is based on a franchise of the same name that SUNNY and friends have seen before in the real world. The franchise can be found in HOBBEEZ. He also appears in his own arcade game titled CAPT. SPACEBOY'S SPACE ADVENTURE, likely an adaptation of the franchise he originated from.
PERSONALITY
As the leader of the SPACE PIRATES, CAPT. SPACEBOY is an adventurous man who desires to explore the galaxies and seeks a greater purpose in his life. He is also shown to be deeply sensitive towards those he cares about, notably his father PINKBEARD and former wife SWEETHEART. CAPT. SPACEBOY notably appears to be a talented musician, as he created his own SPECIAL MIXTAPE out of his love for SWEETHEART. His loyal SPACE PIRATES describe him as a competent leader with a strong amount of bravery and courage.
However, CAPT. SPACEBOY does possess a rather emotional persona whenever he suffers from his breakup with SWEETHEART or her overbearing personality. This transforms him into the vengeful SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND, who only comes out when SPACEBOY feels angry. In this form, SPACEBOY's personality takes a negative turn as he desires revenge against SWEETHEART for breaking his heart and will harm anyone who tries to interfere out of pure rage.
Despite this, he eventually returns to his old self and is amicable towards OMORI and friends. However, SPACEBOY's second breakup with SWEETHEART turns him into an emotionally despondent figure, becoming the nearly-catatonic SPACE EX-HUSBAND. Having no will to continue living, SPACE EX-HUSBAND loses all purpose in life and deeply misses SWEETHEART, constantly recalling any memory he spent with her. However, he snaps out of this state once OMORI and friends help him regain purpose and his life back on track.
STORY
PROLOGUE
When OMORI and friends enter his house for the first time, CAPT. SPACEBOY, who now goes by SPACE BOYFRIEND, is found in his room, bedridden due to a heartbreak with SWEETHEART and in a depressed state. The SPACE PIRATES ask OMORI and friends to retrieve his SPECIAL MIXTAPE from the JUNKYARD in hopes of revitalizing SPACE BOYFRIEND.
Once the SPECIAL MIXTAPE has been brought back, upon playing it in the boombox, SPACE BOYFRIEND leaps out of bed, enraged at the memory of SWEETHEART's poor treatment towards him during their relationship, and is now named SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND. In his fury, he attacks OMORI and friends and initiates a boss fight.
Once he has been defeated, he calms down and apologizes for his behavior. He reverts his name back to CAPT. SPACEBOY and thanks the team, also giving them a TRAIN PASS. He isn't too bothered by the loss of PLUTO, stating that PLUTO may also be destined for greater things. He gathers his crew and they go on journeys across space again.
He can later be found at the FROZEN LAKE sitting on a bench and enjoying SNO-CONEs with his crew. When spoken to, CAPT. SPACEBOY mentions the calming atmosphere of the moment and notes that he finally feels at peace after being devoured by breakup-induced thoughts and emotions for a long time.
THREE DAYS LEFT
After defeating SWEETHEART, CAPT. SPACEBOY barges in on her wedding in his ship, apologizing to SWEETHEART, and asks for her hand in marriage. SWEETHEART is overjoyed at his proposal and accepts, and, after SWEETHEART destroys the stage, the both of them leave on the now SPACE HUSBAND's spaceship.
TWO DAYS LEFT
OMORI and friends will encounter SWEETHEART at the first toll gate in DEEP WELL. She scornfully tells the team that she and SPACE HUSBAND divorced after one day, leaving him as SPACE EX-HUSBAND, and shows no remorse regarding her decision.
SPACE EX-HUSBAND and his team of SPACE PIRATES can later be found in MUSTARD SUB in the UNDERWATER HIGHWAY. SPACE EX-HUSBAND dedicates a song to the heartbroken and performs it on the small stage, with his crew watching him and cheering him on from the seats. The song he performs is similar to the song on his SPECIAL MIXTAPE.
From this point, this is the last time OMORI and friends will ever see SPACE EX-HUSBAND as the plot soon diverges from the HEADSPACE story, unless the player is on the OMORI Route.
ONE DAY LEFT
Devastated by his multiple breakups with SWEETHEART, SPACE EX-HUSBAND isolates himself at the very top of SNOWGLOBE MOUNTAIN, in a bid to completely freeze his heart and seal his emotions away so that he would never be hurt again. He anticipated that somebody would search for him, as he leaves messages with MR. PENGUINS along the mountain, telling the recipient of his intentions to shut himself away, warning them against chasing after him, and hinting at his depression. It is unknown if he anticipated OMORI and friends to follow him or if he was expecting someone else.
Only in the OMORI ROUTE, when there is ONE DAY LEFT, OMORI and friends can return to SPACE BOYFRIEND'S HOUSE in OTHERWORLD where they encounter PINKBEARD. PINKBEARD tells them he is looking for his son, CAPT. SPACEBOY. The clue to his location is a set of BATTERIES.
OMORI and friends must make their way up SNOWGLOBE MOUNTAIN to find SPACE EX-HUSBAND. He first appears as a snowman, as if completely frozen over, and speaks with much more emotionless, monotone words. At first, he is is not swayed by the team's persuasion for him to go home. This initiates a boss fight in which throughout the team helps him regain his feeling for EMOTIONS. When defeated, the team succeeds in helping him regain his emotions, and he agrees to return to his home.
He returns to his house and is chided by his father, PINKBEARD, who tells him he always knew he was too good for SWEETHEART. PINKBEARD tells him he should go by no other title apart from CAPT. SPACEBOY, and CAPT. SPACEBOY demurely agrees with him, thus ending his endeavors for love.
He can also be refought as SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND in the BOSS RUSH simulator run by BOSS in HUMPHREY.

Every turn, each enemy will start by trying to use the skill listed at the top. If the calculation fails, they move on to the second skill and so on, until reaching the final skill which is guaranteed to activate. Each calculation is done independently from the previous ones, so the added percentage is not 100%.
Additionally, he will do the following actions as their heart gets lower. Note that SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND's AI during his ENRAGED and FURIOUS states is identical to his ANGRY A.I.:
- 75%
: CAPT. SPACEBOY becomes ANGRY. - 50% : CAPT. SPACEBOY will become ENRAGED.
- 25% : CAPT. SPACEBOY will become FURIOUS.
SPECIAL STATES
Alongside SWEETHEART and the UNBREAD TWINS, SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND is one of the three HEADSPACE bosses to undergo a special emotion state depending on how much HEART he has left for both variants of his boss battle. When doing so, he uses a different set of states that differentiate from regular emotion states the party can use in battle. SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND specializes in the ANGRY emotion state and the other two tiers of ANGRY, consisting of ENRAGED and FURIOUS.
SPACE EX ANGRY
Once SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND reaches 75% HEART, his emotion state becomes automatically locked into ANGRY, resisting the HAPPY and SAD emotion states. This special state is referred to as SPACE EX ANGRY in the game's data. In this state, SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND's ATTACK has increased but DEFENSE is slightly lowered down. The following modifiers added to the enemy consist of:
- ATTACK is increased by 20%.
- DEFENSE is decreased by 10%.
- Emotion weakness/resistance is the same as any ANGRY emotion state.
SPACE EX ENRAGED
After being brought down to 50% HEART, SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND changes his emotion state into SPACE EX ENRAGED. Under the effects of his ENRAGED state, his attacks become hard-hitting and more likely to land critical damage. The following modifiers added to the enemy consist of:
- ATTACK is increased by 50%.
- DEFENSE is decreased by 50%.
- Emotion weakness/resistance is the same as any ANGRY emotion state.
SPACE EX FURIOUS
The final emotion state SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND undergoes upon reaching 25% HEART is his FURIOUS state, known as SPACE EX FURIOUS. His attacks can now inflict massive damage to the point of one-shotting a party member but DEFENSE is largely lowered down. The following modifiers added to the enemy consist of:
- ATTACK is increased by 100%.
- DEFENSE is decreased by 70%.
- Emotion weakness/resistance is the same as any ANGRY emotion state.
STRATEGY
SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND is the first major boss of the game, having a simple yet dangerous mechanic of denying the player the ability to change his EMOTIONS mid-way through the battle. At 75% HP, SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND will become permanently ANGRY and will no longer turn HAPPY or SAD, and as his HEART depletes the emotion will upgrade to ENRAGED (50% HP) and later to FURIOUS (25% HP), with each change increasing his Attack while lowering his Defense. A FURIOUS laser shot can one-hit a party member from full HEART if their current EMOTION is not resistant to it. He can also make a party member SAD to give himself an EMOTION advantage over them.
This boss battle is a pointed lesson in figuring out how to alter the party's EMOTIONS as needed, rather than simply ignoring EMOTIONS and using attacks and damaging skills over and over like in typical RPGs. SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND has much more HP than previous enemies, and his skyrocketing ATTACK will lay waste to an unprepared party — a character can't take advantage of the boss's decreasing DEFENSE if they're TOAST, after all!
You might have settled into the initial strategy of turning him SAD, making AUBREY ANGRY, and then exploiting her HEADBUTT for massive damage. It's not unusual for players to make OMORI SAD for massive STAB damage. SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND'S permanent and mounting ANGER straight-up denies these strategies, so you'll have to use other skill combinations to give yourself an advantage. AUBREY can make your party members HAPPY to set up an emotional advantage, and KEL, who at this point should have learned RUN 'N GUN and FLEX, can use these skills in combination with the HAPPINESS speed boost to deal major damage to SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND. OMORI'S skill set is extremely handy, as his MOCK can offset SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND'S ANGER-induced damage boost so that even KEL can withstand his attacks.
SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND may have a few deadly attacks, but he's equally likely to waste a turn looking wistfully into the distance. He can occasionally inflict SADNESS on a party member to give himself an emotional advantage, but this can be rectified very quickly. All in all, if you can grasp how to manipulate emotions of your party to your advantage, SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND should be challenging but not too difficult.

- Unlike his father and his crew, SPACE BOYFRIEND doesn't have a beak.
- CAPT. SPACEBOY's beloved spaceship is known as the MERCURY RETROGRADE.
- SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND is one of the four HEADSPACE bosses with three-stage emotions, that being FURIOUS. The other three that possess this mechanic consist of SWEETHEART, the UNBREAD TWINS and SPACE EX-HUSBAND.
- Exclusive to the SUNNY ROUTE, CAPT. SPACEBOY makes a brief cameo as SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND in the first FARAWAY TOWN segment as a vision hallucinated by SUNNY. He is seen standing on top of HOBBEEZ and later disappears once SUNNY and KEL buy HERO’S GIFT.
- SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND's scripted ANGRY emotions are different from default ANGRY emotions. SPACE EX ANGRY increases ATTACK to 120% and decreases DEFENSE to 90%, SPACE EX ENRAGED increases ATTACK to 150% and decreases DEFENSE to 50%, and SPACE EX FURIOUS increases ATTACK to 200% and decreases DEFENSE to 30%. In addition, they share an element rate, being SAD 80% and HAPPY 150%.
- SPACE BOYFRIEND was conceived by Jami Lynne, one of the musicians working on OMORI. SPACE BOYFRIEND in-game is shown to have made his own mixtape for SWEETHEART.
- Jami Lynne intended for him to be trans, though OMOCAT was not aware of this[1] and it is not suggested or mentioned in-game.
- SPACE BOYFRIEND was one of the very first bosses to be showcased at the beginning of OMORI'S production. Players were able to encounter him in the very first demo available in 2014 at GR2's GAME NIGHT and Anime Expo 2014.
- The comics that CAPT. SPACEBOY appears in during the real world segments in FARAWAY TOWN also seem to contain OMORI's inspiration for the FOREST BUNNY enemies found early in the game (and possibly the other bunny-type enemies as well). They can be seen on the back cover.
- SUNNY also possesses CAPT. SPACEBOY memorabilia, such as the CAPT. SPACEBOY ACTION FIGURE.[2].
- CAPT. SPACEBOY appears in an old Atari-styled minigame in HOBBEEZ, titled CAPT. SPACEBOY'S SPACE ADVENTURE. It also uses the same ship the character uses in HEADSPACE.
- CAPT. SPACEBOY posters can be found throughout various FARAWAY TOWN households.
- SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND shares the same battle background with THE EARTH.
- In the 2018 Kickstarter demo, SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND serves as the final mandatory enemy fought storywise. This is even lampshaded during the post-battle cutscene, where he tells the group that his fight concludes the demo.
- Once the party obtains the EYE PATCH charm, CAPT. SPACEBOY no longer wears it for his remaining appearances in the game. This extends to his bonus boss fight as SPACE EX-HUSBAND in SNOWGLOBE MOUNTAIN, an area exclusive to the OMORI ROUTE.
- When inflicted with an emotion state, SPACE EX-HUSBAND's right eye (where he originally wore the EYE PATCH), is obscured by the shadow on his face, leaving only his left eye exposed.
