This article contains spoilers of important plot details regarding the plotline of OMORI.

DEEPER WELL is a location in OMORI. It is an aquatic location that can be accessed right at the end of the UNDERWATER HIGHWAY. It also serves as the home of HUMPHREY and several creatures that seem to be aware of the truth.

GEOGRAPHY[]

DeeperWell Falls

The DEEPER WELL is located north of the end of the UNDERWATER HIGHWAY after a long bridge. The location features unique flora unlike others seen previously in the game, as well as unusual characters similar to Yume Nikki's neon creatures. Numerous water-filled holes transport the player between rooms.

Throughout DEEPER WELL, numerous tiny SOMETHINGS appear. Interacting with them will play a distorted and faster version of the "I'm sorry" noise that other LITTLE ONES make throughout BLACK SPACE and BLACK SPACE 2. The end of DEEPER WELL is a large cliff face with a skull at the top. Ascending and entering the skull leads to HUMPHREY's place of residence.

STORY[]

TWO DAYS LEFT[]

As the party ventures further and further into DEEPER WELL, they begin to realize that they're forgetting more and more details of who BASIL is. At the end, they meet HUMPHREY, who does not guide them on their search for BASIL but lets them know that SWEETHEART entered him in search of the SEA WITCHES that take residence within.

After the party beats HUMPHREY, they have completely forgotten about BASIL. The whirlpool where HUMPHREY once rested now leads into a red stream, and the party is stopped along the way as a disembodied voice provides exposition on OMORI's past journeys and BLACK SPACE. The end of the red stream opens into a shortcut back to the NEIGHBOR'S ROOM.

ONE DAY LEFT[]

During the final day of the OMORI ROUTE, the party can return to DEEPER WELL, either through the normal entrance or by interacting with a toilet outside LAST RESORT. The area is slightly different, however; all of the creatures residing there have disappeared except for CIPHER, and three pages of SHEET MUSIC are scattered throughout the area. These pages of SHEET MUSIC are required to open the three SOMETHING fights in the LOST LIBRARY and access BLACK SPACE 2.

HUMPHREY has also returned to his usual location (making the shortcut from DEEPER WELL to NEIGHBOR'S ROOM unavailable). If the party has received the GIANT CHECK from MR. JAWSUM, they can feed it to HUMPHREY in order to re-access his insides.

NOTABLE AREAS[]

DEEPERWELL PATH[]

The first area of the DEEPER WELL is known as the DEEPERWELL PATH. From there, the player will be introduced to the dampened atmosphere of the area with various jellyfish, translucent lamps, and platforms containing water. One thing to note is that running for DEEPER WELL is disabled until reaching the TRENCH and onward.

When arriving there for the first time, simply continue going up north. The party will eventually reach a large platform with a strange water-filled hole that functions as a whirlpool portal.

In addition, a short cutscene plays out, revealing that the friend group is slowly losing their memories of BASIL, hinting of something ominous occurring offscreen. Regardless, continue moving forward by entering the whirlpool.

You will then be taken to a long, darkened hallway filled with aquatic flora and waterfalls. The player can also hear the sounds of a waterfall playing in the background. Head over to the next water-filled portal to continue.

DEEPERWELL FALLS[]

The second area is known as the DEEPERWELL FALLS. After entering the previous whirlpool portal, head up north and you'll reach a large island that resembles a hub of some sort. Various waterfalls are shown in the background. This is also where BLANK, one of DEEPER WELL's many residents, can be found.

Most of DEEPER WELL's residents can only be understood properly when speaking to them as OMORI. Speaking to them with any other party member will simply lead to them only hearing mumbling. BLANK will notice that OMORI's memories aren't free. They then inform him that to obtain another lost memory, another one must be shrouded, but solemnly mentions that all memories will fade away eventually.

There are three whirlpool portals, each leading to a different location. The only whirlpool portal that leads to the TRENCH is the top one. The other two portals will simply bring the party to dead-end areas. Note that almost all whirlpool rooms contain the other DEEPER WELL residents and a few watermelons containing items.

Deeper Well Left Area

Taking the whirlpool to the west leads to a series of a few small islands.

There is not much to do there, but you can interact with two DEEPER WELL NPCs: EMPTY and NULL. Both of them will tell OMORI cryptic messages regarding the truth behind HEADSPACE's existence, like with the other residents. Continuing west leads to a dead-end as mentioned before. A LARGE FACE can be found there, and can be smashed by using AUBREY's tag ability.

DEEPER WELL FACE

This only works if you have already spoken to the one in ORANGE OASIS. Entering the hole will transport the party to an aquatic alcove. Inside features a watermelon containing a single JAM PACKETS.

Other than that, simply head back to the center hub as going west won't bring the party any further through the areas of DEEPER WELL.

RIGHT WHIRLPOOL[]

Deeper Well Right Area

Taking the whirlpool to the east transports the party to a long hallway with two pathways. Heading south brings you to another whirlpool next to PARVENU and a watermelon containing a RAIN CLOUD.

Continuing down that path brings you to a small island where ABSENT can be found. This is also where one of the three SHEET MUSIC for the LOST LIBRARY can be found on ONE DAY LEFT of the OMORI ROUTE.

Sheet Music (Location 1)

Note that collecting all SHEET MUSIC will allow the player to refight all fear bosses corresponding to SUNNY's fears. Heading east brings the group to two islands of varying sizes. The NPCs MINUS and DECAY are located there as well.

The island at the deep bottom holds another SHEET MUSIC for the player to obtain. Other than that, simply head back to the center hub as going east won't bring the party any further through the areas of DEEPER WELL.

TOP WHIRLPOOL[]

Deeper Well Top Area

As mentioned before, entering the top whirlpool portal allows the player to progress. Doing so first brings you to another hallway. At the entrance features a small pool with a watermelon holding LIFE JAM. AUGHT can be found within this hallway and can be interacted like the other NPCs. To keep moving forward, simply enter the whirlpool located north of the entrance.

Upon doing so, the player will be brought to a cave entrance. The ladder below the group is where CIPHER and the last SHEET MUSIC are located. Unlike the other NPCs found here, CIPHER is the only one who will not disappear from DEEPER WELL on ONE DAY LEFT. Entering the cave will bring the group to the next subarea of DEEPER WELL.

HALLWAY OF HANDS[]

After entering the cave, the player will be brought to a long hallway where the party can swim through to progress. The walls shown feature multiple paintings of hands that resemble the ones found in WHITE SPACE. Eventually, you will be brought to a diversion, one that gives the player heavy hints of the game's backstory.

Going upwards leads to a small area featuring a mysterious coral tree known as the BRANCH CORAL. STRANGER is also briefly encountered here, sitting on the swing the BRANCH CORAL is holding before slowly vanishing. You can talk to the BRANCH CORAL and it will answer questions regarding BASIL, BIG YELLOW CAT, and WHITE SPACE.

Deeper Well (Branch Coral)

Afterwards, you will be able to leave, not before the tree offers OMORI a chance to obtain more power through a sacrifice. You can either accept or deny the BRANCH CORAL's offer of "sacrifice" but doing any choice will not influence any endings or outcomes in the game, but will only give OMORI the stat boost if accepted.

Either way, the player can continue swimming through the hallway until reaching another whirlpool portal. Entering it leads to one of the final mandatory areas of DEEPER WELL, and by extension, HEADSPACE.

SACRIFICE AREA[]

Sacrifice Room (Sunny Apple)

If choosing to accept the BRANCH CORAL's sacrifice, it will then tell OMORI to stay still as the screen darkens. The screen will then rotate to OMORI's front view as a reddish pool forms underneath him, and transports him to a strange room filled with various dark-colored hands emerging from the waters.

Unlike the other DEEPER WELL areas, this room is rather ominous in nature as it notably features a darkish-red tree holding a single apple from its branch. Interacting with the apple will cause it to slowly morph into SUNNY's head. You will then be given an option to eat the "apple". Not accepting this offer will cause the apple to revert back to its original state.

Accepting this offer will lead to a darkened screen where OMORI devours the "apple", complete with sounds of him slowly chewing into the fruit. The screen will also transition to a distorted cutscene similar to the flashback of SUNNY's near-death experience with drowning.

Sunny Red Pool

In that brief sequence, SUNNY is instead shown floating in a red liquid and shadowy tendrils can be seen swarming around him. Afterward, the text box will reveal that OMORI's stats have been permanently boosted with an additional 50 HEART, 50 JUICE, 10 ATTACK, 10 DEFENSE, and 10 SPEED.

The screen then brings OMORI back to the area where the BRANCH CORAL once stood. However, the BRANCH CORAL appears to be devoid of its colors and inspecting it reveals that it is dead. This renders any further interactions with the BRANCH CORAL null as it can no longer be spoken to properly.

Accepting the sacrifice has no impact on the real world. The only thing lost through the sacrifice is the ability to talk to the BRANCH CORAL.

TRENCH[]

The TRENCH serves as the penultimate area of the DEEPER WELL, accessed from entering the last cave entrance from the top whirlpool portal.

The overall layout of the map consists of a dark cavern filled with various LITTLE ONES that moan “Help Me” in a high-pitched tone. In addition, the screen becomes darker and the music becomes more ominous to signify that the group is slowly reaching the end of their journey.

Head up by using the ladders and you'll reach a creepily-shaped cavern resembling what appears to be a large skull of an angler fish. The only NPCs located here consist of HOLLOW, MUTE, and VOID. All three will say cryptic messages like with the other previous NPCs.

Large Whirlpool (Last Resort Portal)

Note that after defeating HUMPHREY, a large whirlpool near the entrance is formed. This whirlpool serves as a portal that can transport the party back to the LAST RESORT through a toilet that originally contained RAMEN. This also applies to ONE DAY LEFT as the large whirlpool will remain there.

HUMPHREY'S CAVE[]

HUMPHREY'S CAVE is the main residence of HUMPHREY, the oldest of the three great creatures of HEADSPACE. MARI's picnic basket is nearby the entrance, so save up before progressing. The character himself is found floating within his own pool near a pier.

When speaking to HUMPHREY, he will introduce himself to the party and reveal he also serves as a home for three sea witches inside of him. The smiling whale then opens his mouth, allowing the group to enter his insides, which serves as the final mandatory location in HEADSPACE.

Upon defeating HUMPHREY, he will disappear and leave behind the W and (if it was missed inside HUMPHREY earlier) T Keys required for the HANGMAN game. A large whirlpool is formed from where he once stood. Enter it and you will be taken to the final area of DEEPER WELL.

On the OMORI ROUTE, HUMPHREY returns to this place during the epilogue and is revealed to be still hungry. If you have the GIANT CHECK from MR. JAWSUM, give it to him, and this will allow you to regain access to his insides once more.

MAP OF TRUTH[]

The MAP OF TRUTH is a long, narrow passageway filled with reddish-pink water. This location contains the truth behind HEADSPACE's existence as well as various SOMETHING variants lurking in the darkness, notably LILI and SALLI.

Upon entering the MAP OF TRUTH, swimming through the corridor will periodically stop OMORI and the party as a disembodied voice provides exposition on his past adventures in the HEADSPACE, and how the KEYS have repeatedly pointed them to the truth, before he resets the imaginary dream world to conceal it each time it happens.

Curtain Night (Duet)

This time, the KEYS all point to the heart of the VAST FOREST, and the projection of MARI, which OMORI has always regenerated, will guide him to it.

At the end of this area, the camera will reveal a darkened curtain with a starry background, often associated with MARI. The curtain then vanishes and is replaced with a wall painting of SOMETHING. Interact with the painting and the party will be dropped off at the NEIGHBOR'S ROOM through a small cabinet door with one single eye glancing back from there.

This area can be revisited as long as you haven't entered BLACK SPACE yet. When attempting to revisit this area on ONE DAY LEFT of the OMORI ROUTE, it will be inaccessible as HEADSPACE has been reset to repress everything pertaining to the truth regarding MARI's death.

DEEPER WELL is home to several creatures who seem to know who SUNNY is, offering advice, questions, and words of warning for him. Only OMORI can understand what the inhabitants of the DEEPER WELL say; when tagged, the others can only hear mumbling.

  • OMOCAT states that the reason behind DEEPER WELL using a dark neon-like color scheme is because they wanted to convey a sense of intensity, as the NPC dialogue in that area "became much more introspective".[1]
  • It is mentioned by MARI near the DEEP WELL that DEEPER WELL has existed for a long time, but the clear bridge that connects to it wasn't there until during the game's events.[2]
  • With the exception of PARVENU, all of the creatures in DEEPER WELL have names relating to nothingness, destruction, or obfuscation.
Unused NPC (Deeper Well)
  • There exists an unused NPC that was presumably meant to appear within the DEEPER WELL. It is unknown why they were scrapped, but their sprites still exist within the game's files.
  • The BRANCH CORAL's dialogue all seems to provide hints of the game's backstory:
    • BRANCH CORAL stating that BASIL is in another world further implies that BLACK SPACE (and by extension, WHITE SPACE) are not considered parts of HEADSPACE.
    • The three great creatures mentioned by BRANCH CORAL are all present in HEADSPACE. The oldest is HUMPHREY, a character originally from a children's book owned by SUNNY named HUNGRY HUMPHREY. The wisest is ABBI, OMORI's former imaginary friend. The "prison" she is trapped in is THE ABYSS; it is not known why ABBI was stripped of her wisdom and banished. The favorite, the BIG YELLOW CAT, is seen in the NEIGHBOR'S ROOM. The BIG YELLOW CAT appears to take influence from a piece of playground equipment in FARAWAY PARK or a calendar in the TREEHOUSE, perhaps both.
    • BRANCH CORAL's statement about WHITE SPACE heavily implies that the black light bulb represents the repression of SUNNY's traumatic memories. This is further implied by the events following the light bulb's destruction.
  • In the 2019 build of the game, DEEPER WELL originally did not exist as crossing from the END OF THE HIGHWAY's bridge simply transitions the party straight to the TRENCH subarea.
  • DEEPER WELL serves as one of the five locations where the MYSTERY POTION's effects can work properly. The other four areas consist of the DEEP WELL, LAST RESORT, HUMPHREY, and THE ABYSS.
  • The line "Perhaps ______ for you", spoken by the disembodied voice within the MAP OF TRUTH, differs depending on which route the player is on.
    • If the player is on the SUNNY ROUTE: "Perhaps it is too late for you."
    • If the player is on the OMORI ROUTE: "Perhaps there is still hope for you."
  • In the official track #110 Numbers, a voice can be heard of a girl reciting the numbers 1 through 10 in German, a sample from a famous Polish shortwave numbers station known as "Swedish Rhapsody". This BGM is used for the room with the BRANCH CORAL and INCUBATION from BLACK SPACE.
  • Majority of the dialogue spoken by the DEEPER WELL residents all seem to correlate with the game's themes:
    • VOID's quote ultimately alludes to SUNNY's decision whether he should save BASIL from his ongoing guilt or simply leave him to rot in his own wallowing despair. These words also foreshadows one of the final bosses of the SUNNY ROUTE.
    • Like with ??? from BASIL'S RAFT PATH, MUTE's quotes allude to the choices SUNNY makes throughout the game, whether he chooses to wake up and face reality or stay asleep in his imaginary world of escapism.
    • AUGHT's dialogue largely relates to SUNNY's decision to flee from his problems and instead resign to his endless cycle of escapism through OMORI and HEADSPACE. These actions led to SUNNY's life going downhill, and these words can all depend on the choices he makes throughout the game.
    • CIPHER's quote references the words engraved on MARI's gravestone in the FARAWAY CEMETERY, the place where she was buried: "OUR DEAREST MARI; THE SUN SHINED BRIGHTER WHEN SHE WAS HERE."
    • HOLLOW's words likely refer to the time SUNNY nearly drowned in the lake at FARAWAY PARK, which led to MARI diving in to save him. These words also reflect on the life choices he would eventually make after that incident.
  • The window that appears within the MAP OF TRUTH also briefly appears as a hallucination in SUNNY'S HOUSE on TWO DAYS LEFT when SUNNY himself briefly sees a vision of MARI's spirit playing the piano.
  • DEEPER WELL, CLUB SANDWICH, and SNOWGLOBE MOUNTAIN (not counting the area SPACE EX-HUSBAND is fought within), are the only areas that don't use a cropped version of a battle background for the TAGGING polaroids.
  • The BGM Aquifer is named bs_aquifer in the game's files, implying that it was originally intended to be used in BLACK SPACE.
