SPOILER WARNING
This article contains spoilers of important plot details regarding the plotline of OMORI.

FARAWAY TOWN is one of the two primary locations in OMORI, the other being HEADSPACE. It is the hometown of SUNNY and his friends, and can be explored only when SUNNY awakens and chooses to head outside after four years of isolation within his house.[1]

GEOGRAPHY

FARAWAY TOWN is a small suburban town located ambiguously in the continental United States. It is a peaceful neighborhood featuring rows of normal-looking houses and a few shops visitors can check out occasionally. Its residents are mostly amicable and friendly but a few of them such as the HOOLIGANS occasionally cause trouble on the streets.

Each street within FARAWAY TOWN contains four rows of houses where its residents reside. The town also contains a playground, a hidden hangout spot, a plaza filled with local shops and restaurants, and a church to find peace within. Unlike HEADSPACE, there are no roaming overworld enemies to fight, as the fights primarily happen by story-progression means or by initiating them in certain areas. Despite this, many of these areas are required for exploration if the player wants to unlock the "Universally Loved" achievement through a number of optional sidequests that can be initiated, depending on the NPC SUNNY interacts with and a day's segment.

When exploring FARAWAY TOWN, SUNNY can interact with various NPCs, some of them offering optional sidequests to complete upon first interaction. A few of these NPCs are figures SUNNY hasn't seen in a long time, such as THE HOOLIGANS, and may bear resemblances to the dreamlike creatures found in HEADSPACE as OMORI. Other than that, the main objective when doing the FARAWAY TOWN segments is to uncover the truth behind SUNNY's past troubles and reconnect with his old friends that he hasn't interacted with in four years.

BACKGROUND

SUNNY and MARI grew up together with KEL, HERO, AUBREY and BASIL in FARAWAY TOWN. The group of friends would always explore different places to hang out and make the best of memories. However, this all changed when MARI died for unknown reasons, shattering the friend group's bond.

Four years after MARI's untimely death, HERO has left for college and SUNNY is moving away. Four days before moving away, SUNNY has the option to meet up with KEL for the first time in years to explore FARAWAY TOWN and its various residents, to reconnect with the bonds he has left. Doing so will initiate the main route of the game, known as the SUNNY ROUTE.

LOCATIONS

STREETS

SUNNY'S STREET

SUNNY'S STREET is the primary residence of where the game's silent protagonist SUNNY resides all by himself. It is also where his neighbors KEL, HERO, CRIS, and THE MAVERICK live as well. This street is the first area SUNNY can explore outside, only if he accepts KEL's request to open the door and spend his last three days in town with friends. Continuing east from where SUNNY goes outside allows him to venture through the rest of FARAWAY TOWN in the process. The back of SUNNY's house is where the old TREEHOUSE is located within his abandoned backyard.

The first house within the place is none other than SUNNY'S HOUSE. The house is largely vacant due to most of the objects inside being stored into cardboard boxes, as SUNNY'S MOM has planned to take her son to move away into the big city. Throughout the story, SUNNY will occasionally experience hallucinations inside the house, mostly in the form of SOMETHING haunting him in different forms. It is only the REAL WORLD location explored if SUNNY chooses to remain indoors doing his chores for his remaining three days on an alternate route.

KEL'S HOUSE is the house next to SUNNY'S HOUSE, and the home of KEL and HERO's family. Unlike their neighbor's home, KEL and HERO's home is rather lively and bright in atmosphere. KEL invites SUNNY to come over to his house after finishing some errands on TWO DAYS LEFT, allowing him to enter the household and talk with KEL's parents. They later spend time hanging out at the place upon HERO's return from college, even eating dinner there for old times sake.

The other two remaining houses, which belong to CRIS and THE MAVERICK's families respectively, are optional places to explore. CRIS's dad ALL-AMERICAN GUY has lost his remote, and the group can find it for him when inside. THE MAVERICK's home is accessible starting from TWO DAYS LEFT, primarily during the afternoon where he senses an "evil force" lurking inside.

AUBREY'S STREET

AUBREY'S STREET is the primary residence of where the troubled delinquent AUBREY resides with her deadbeat mother, located southwest of the crossroad intersection subarea. This street is also where SEAN, KAREN, SARAH, and GRUFF GUY live as well. This area is primarily explored on THREE DAYS LEFT when SUNNY and KEL try to find AUBREY's whereabouts after learning that she stole BASIL's beloved PHOTO ALBUM. Continuing to move west of the street leads to FARAWAY TOWN's local CHURCH, where AUBREY goes there herself to find peace after the tragedy that occurred four years ago.

AUBREY's worn-down house is the first house found on that block. Unlike other house interiors, the insides are very dirty and unorganized with various piles of trash lying around on each floor. It can only be properly entered during the start of ONE DAY LEFT, where the group try to talk with AUBREY and mend their friendship despite their previous conflict with each other. It is also mentioned that the friend group never visited AUBREY's home before in the past, likely due to her not wanting them to learn of her family's poor living conditions.

The house next to AUBREY's belongs to the newlyweds SEAN and KAREN, who are deciding to throw a housewarming party after moving into their new home. This place can only be visited on ONE DAY LEFT if SUNNY has interacted with the couple before within FIX-IT on THREE DAYS LEFT to initiate their sidequest.

The house after that belongs to SARAH and her parents. It can be first visited during the afternoon segment of THREE DAYS LEFT. The sidequest initiated there involves CLUMSY GUY trying to save his own wedding with his wife PONYTAIL LADY. The last house, which belongs to GRUFF GUY, is primarily explored whenever the group encounters the former at FIX-IT and him asking them to come over to watch him attempt to fix his ongoing leak problem.

BASIL'S STREET

BASIL'S STREET is where BASIL, his grandmother, and caretaker POLLY primarily reside, located southeast of the crossroad intersection subarea. It is first explored after SUNNY and KEL help drop BASIL off at his house on THREE DAYS LEFT, and where they learn of AUBREY stealing the PHOTO ALBUM from him too. This is also where JESSE, BEBE, ANGEL, and ARTIST reside as well.

The first house, which is surrounded with various flowers and plants, belonging to BASIL himself. Once inside, SUNNY and KEL reconnect with BASIL but the flower boy appears to be deeply troubled for unknown reasons. The group later revisits the house on the following two days to check on BASIL, as well as SUNNY revisiting past memories of a long-repressed truth locked inside of his mind.

The house next to BASIL's home is where WRINKLY FOREHEAD and his son JESSE live. Though the interior is a bit worn-down and damaged, WRINKLY FOREHEAD desires to buy something for JESSE's 10th birthday, and is having trouble doing so. Right next to that house is the residence of BEBE, her mother, and her older siblings BRANDI and BILLY. It is only visited once the group helps BEBE's mom with reminding BILLY to buy a FLOOR LAMP at FIX-IT on the afternoon segment of TWO DAYS LEFT.

The last house belongs to ARTIST and her little brother ANGEL. When knocking on the door, ARTIST invites the group to help her with a variety of tasks such as giving her advice for her upcoming artwork or help fetching ANGEL from another place. ANGEL can also be fought inside of his room for a rematch on that same day. Other than that, this street is often visited whenever the group tries to look after BASIL's well-being.

OTHER STREET

The last street is known as the OTHER STREET, where KIM, VANCE, and CHARLENE primarily reside with their families. It is located northeast of the crossroad intersection subarea. Other notable NPCs that live on that block consist of BRENT and JOY, two children that can be tutored on THREE DAYS LEFT, if SUNNY has obtained the flyers inside of OTHERMART.

The first and third houses are where BRENT and JOY's families can be found respectively. When obtaining the flyers, knocking on those doors will grant SUNNY's group access inside, mostly to tutor the children that need help with a specific subject. The second house, belonging to KIM and VANCE's mother RED-GLASSES LADY, is accessed upon helping her find a pair of missing GARDEN SHEARS.

The last house, which belongs to CHARLENE's mother YELLOW BUN GRANNY, is accessed after SUNNY and KEL help bring her prescription meds from OTHERMART's PHARMACY center. Inside is also where one of CHARLENE's siblings TUCKER can be found within his room.

INTERSECTION

The intersection that links between the characters' streets and FARAWAY PARK up north is known as the CROSSROADS. This is also where the group first met AUBREY during their childhood youth, as revealed when interacting with the lone pink pinwheel on the bottom right corner of the intersection subarea.

Though not much is done there, the group can find a few visions depending on the day they encounter them. One of those visions is a lone WORMHOLE from OTHERWORLD, floating around during THREE DAYS LEFT. Note that this location should not be confused with a later location only accessible when SUNNY uncovers the truth behind his past.

MAIN AREAS

FARAWAY PARK

Up north from the CROSSROADS intersection is FARAWAY TOWN's local park, which contains a wide open space with lush green grass and surrounded by trees. This is also one of the various spots SUNNY and his friends used to play at during their childhood youth. The sign in front of the park reads out that "THE FUTURE BELONGS TO THE DREAMERS!" The area itself is surrounded by trees, and has a basketball court at the west. The main section of the park features a small playground filled with various playthings such as a swing, monkey bars, a slide, and a large metallic cat resembling that of HEADSPACE's BIG YELLOW CAT.

A lone white bench is shown near the playground, and this is often where PRETTY BOY takes breaks on a few occasions. To the top of it is where the OLD LADY is trying to reduce TRASH across the town, and a lone tetherball poll. To the left is a large basketball court where JOCK occupies most of the time, and SMELLY HOBO is shown hiding somewhere there. Below there is a picnic table and a few toys. APPLE GUY can be found running his fruit cart, wanting to give visitors APPLE JUICE to compete with his brother who sells ORANGE JUICE. A lone red picnic basket like that of MARI's can be used to save progress too. OLD HOBO can be found lying to the left of the park, and can be given money for earning items that aren't worth using.

There is a small grove in the trees with a bench and fruit cart inside at the north east, and an entrance from the road at the south. Further east into the park are more trees, as well as another bench. In the middle of the park is an expanse of bark chips, which is home to a swing set, slide, monkey bars, and a small play structure. North of the park is HANGOUT SPOT, while east of it is FARAWAY PLAZA. The east direction of the park also contains two vending machines like the ones found in HEADSPACE on occasions.

FARAWAY PLAZA

FARAWAY TOWN's local plaza is where many of its shops can be found. These consist mainly of HOBBEEZ, GINO'S, OTHERMART, AND FIX-IT. There are many street lamps, and there is a fountain next to the stores. Below, there is a parking lot, where many of the spots are taken up. Below it is the road. It is east of FARAWAY PARK.

This is also where MICHAEL the guitar-playing man appears, mostly wanting some money to be able to get out of town to fulfill his dreams. The group can offer him up to a max total of $30.00 to fulfill those requirements. In front of OTHERMART stands ORANGE GUY, who sells ORANGE JUICE.

HANGOUT SPOT

Heading up northeast of FARAWAY PARK leads to the friend group's old HANGOUT SPOT. Initially one of the spots where the group often visited, it is currently used by AUBREY and her new friends the HOOLIGANS for their own personal space. It is revealed that the reason the friend group stopped coming there was due to SUNNY nearly drowning when accidentally falling into the lake there.

It consists of a grassy clearing, with surrounding trees. There is a lake with a small pier, and a small island with a statue that serves as the symbol of FARAWAY TOWN; a gateway to a better life. There is some trash scattered around, and there is a bench on the far end of the lake. On the top right corner is a group of pinwheels, each having a color that alludes to the friend group's current selves. A blue picnic basket is right near the lake but isn't the same one MARI would normally use before.

CHURCH

Continuing west is where FARAWAY CHURCH is found. SUNNY and KEL first visit this location when trying to find AUBREY's whereabouts on THREE DAYS LEFT. Inside is filled with various benches and pillars. Up front is where the PREACHER does his regular sermon sessions and right beside him is a piano branded as OMORI. The top doors lead to FARAWAY cemetery, where the deceased are laid to rest.

The group can later revisit the CHURCH for the following two days, though it might be required to do so in terms of earning an achievement for completing one of the optional sidequests. Note that one of the glass-stained windows appears to have a difference color shade due to a past incident where KEL accidentally threw a baseball through said window.

FARAWAY CEMETERY

Upon going into FARAWAY CEMETERY, the group is taken to a large cemetery filled with various tombstones and gifts left behind a deceased person's tomb. It is lined with rows of tombs, each showcasing the name of a deceased person buried underneath. It is located behind FARAWAY TOWN's CHURCH.

Not that many people visit here but only a few come here to pay respect to their loved ones that are now gone from the world itself. The only NPC the group can interact with is an old man known as OLD BEARDY. Talking to him allows the group to hear his cryptic speeches, such as him believing that he can see spirits and speaking of people mourning very soon.

RECYCULTIST'S HQ

A hidden dungeon area that can only be accessed after SUNNY and his friends complete FASHIONABLE MOM's sidequest of reminding her son BILLY to fetch her a FLOOR LAMP at FIX-IT on TWO DAYS LEFT. It is found within the HANGOUT SPOT at the start of ONE DAY LEFT if said requirements are met before.

Unlike other areas in FARAWAY TOWN, once the group interacts with the front of the dungeon, SUNNY and his friends will be transported inside of the dungeon, thus beginning their adventure to stop RECYCLEPATH's plans to recycle the entire world to ensure his vision. The primary objective is to venture through the area while battling the RECYCULTISTS lurking around. In addition, the player has access to the group's tag abilities from HEADSPACE, all of which can be used for progression.

Reaching the top of the dungeon reveals RECYCLEPATH, who preaches his vision of a "trashless world", and attacks the party as part of cleansing the world. The outcome of the following boss fight determines whether the quest is completed or not.

SHOPS

HOBBEEZ

The first shop explored during the game's story is HOBBEEZ, a local shop where one can buy old items and toys for the sake of nostalgia. It is located to the right of the plaza's fountain and to the left of GINO'S DINER. SUNNY and KEL have visited this shop many times before to play games late night before during their childhood youths. In the present, the two come here again to buy HERO a gift when he returns from college.

Talking to PEDRO gives the opportunity to purchase a PET ROCK for $10, initiating the entire PET ROCKS minigame across FARAWAY TOWN. He also mentions that HOBBEEZ doubles as a pawn shop where you can sell unneeded items in the real world. A music CD can be found behind the poster, and the five CDs on display can also be purchased for $10 each. One can also interact with an INTERESTING POSTER in the top right corner of HOBBEEZ.

Doing so will allow SUNNY to fight JACKSON. Defeating him will allow SUNNY to obtain the MERRY CD. The game cabinet lets you play CAPT. SPACEBOY'S SPACE ADVENTURE. The gacha machine lets you get random charms with aesthetic function (Excluding the CHIMERA KEYCHAIN, which grants a +5 Luck boost), but only one of each charm can be awarded to the player. This shop is the only one that lacks a part-time job for SUNNY to take on.

OTHERMART

The next shop visited is OTHERMART, a large supermarket located on the right side of the street and is adjacent in terms of mapping to the FARAWAY PARK. The name bears a resemblance to OTHERWORLD, and some of the elements within resemble those of its HEADSPACE counterpart. The interior is filled with various foods and beverages one can buy. The middle section is filled with frozen foods, cooking objects, and cereal boxes in their respective aisles. The top corner of the supermarket features various small shops.

The first one is the MEAT section, where the pun-loving MEAT MAN prepares and sells raw meat to his customers. The second top section is the SEAFOOD section, where AYEE sells raw sea meat to her customers. SUNNY can also perform one of the three available part-time jobs in this area. The objective of this minigame involves SUNNY having to swat flies using a FLY SWATTER given to him by the old lady. Completing it rewards $20.00. Note that this character is also the final opponent of the PET ROCKS sidequest.

The third shop is a local bread bakery, run by MIKHAEL's parents and older siblings DAPHNE and BOWEN. It is revealed by MRS. BAKER that her family has been running the bakery for four generations, and MIKHAEL is the only member currently not interested in helping them out. KEL and SUNNY also visit here to buy some bread on TWO DAYS LEFT for KEL's errands. Heading west leads to the PHARMACY area run by the PHARMACIST, while going east is where MISS CANDICE's CANDY STORE can be found. Note that the CANDY STORE is also where KIM and VANCE like to run off with stolen candy whenever they get the chance to steal some.

GINO'S DINER

GINO'S DINER is FARAWAY TOWN's local pizza place, located between HOBBEEZ and OTHERMART. The interior of the pizza parlor is derived of mainly wooden planks for a flooring and a mismatched brick patterned wall. The chairs have red seats and are placed around tables bearing a cloth reminiscent of the one hanging out of MARI's picnic basket.

Many barrels and potted plants are scattered around the floor as decoration, as is a cooler next to the jukebox. From there, SUNNY can insert a total of thirteen CDs, all of which music connoisseur RAI will point out to the group. The songs played are short remixes of songs that can be heard throughout the game.

An arcade game machine is shown on the upper right hand corner of the interior which can be used to play SPROUT MOLE EATER with the usage of an ARCADE PIECE. SUNNY can perform one of the three part-time jobs where he delivers pizza to customers when accepting a job listing board. The amount of money earned, however, depends on how well SUNNY's customer satisfaction ratings once he finishes this job.

FIX-IT

FIX-IT is a tool store found to the right of OTHERMART, in FARAWAY PLAZA. The exterior seems to have various tools and paint scattered around, with a broken roof. Inside, there are many racks of various tools, along with paint, lamps, fertilizer, and other home decor options. At the back, there is an open area which sells many gardening supplies, along with various flowers.

This is also where SUNNY initiates one of three available part-time jobs to earn money. The part-job done in FIX-IT involves SUNNY having to organize and sort out tools up front. When doing this job, the primary objective is to place misplaced tools into the right category. Finishing this part-time job will earn $30.00 for SUNNY's group.

HOSPITAL

At the end of the game's true route, SUNNY awakens in the HOSPITAL after saving BASIL from committing suicide, as well as overcoming OMORI within his mind. It is from there, SUNNY has come to terms with the past and is ready to move on. It is the final location of the game as the story itself comes to a conclusion there, with two different outcomes depending on the player's choices for the final boss.

There are various flowers surrounding his hospital bed, which can be earned depending on the people SUNNY has helped out throughout these last three days at FARAWAY TOWN. Though, some are just earned automatically without any further requirements. Reading them showcases can also inspect the flowers surrounding his bed, revealing thank-you messages left by those he's helped out throughout his journey.

Once SUNNY leaves his hospital room, he will vision mirages of past faces and a shadowy figure that go separate ways. The only thing left to do is to head towards BASIL's hospital room, and be ready to confess the truth of the past. Doing so will lead to the game's good ending, and a peaceful bittersweet credits plays in the aftermath.

Note that the balcony of the hospital is only explored if SUNNY chooses to not continue against the final boss and instead succumb to his guilt and trauma. Jumping off the balcony will lead to the game's bad ending, where SUNNY is unable to recover from his past, and instead chooses to delve deeper into his imaginary world of escapism... forever.

BACKGROUNDS

TRIVIA

  • According to OMOCAT, FARAWAY TOWN is based on suburban America, describing it as a nostalgic and charming world one would know in real life.[2]
    • OMOCAT's exposure to different types of households inspired the ones featured throughout FARAWAY TOWN. These included supermarkets, hardware stores, parks, and churches that serve their own communities across America.
    • The themes of FARAWAY TOWN were inspired by OMOCAT's personal life experiences, such as playing piano, taking photography, flower assortment, cooking, and many more.
  • Many of HEADSPACE's elements appear to be based on FARAWAY TOWN's residents and locations. This is most prominent with dream versions of the main characters, as well as some of the NPCs residing in the dreamy landscape.
  • On the morning of THREE DAYS LEFT, the player can encounter visions of WORMHOLE (CROSSROAD) and SPACE BUNNY (OTHER STREET) after purchasing HERO’S GIFT. Interacting with them will cause them to disappear.
