BASIL serves as the penultimate boss for the SUNNY ROUTE in OMORI during the night of ONE DAY LEFT if SUNNY decides to save the former by preventing him from committing suicide.

STORY[]

After SUNNY reunites with his friends in the morning, the group decides to check on BASIL to see if he's doing alright. Unfortunately, POLLY informs them that BASIL is at the HOSPITAL due to his grandmother being rushed there for intensive care the day prior. Despite this, HERO suggests checking on BASIL later and asks SUNNY if they can see the old TREEHOUSE in his house again.

Upon visiting the TREEHOUSE and reconciling for good, the group returns to BASIL'S HOUSE only to find that BASIL has locked himself away in his room, unresponsive. Despite their many attempts, none of them can make BASIL come outside. Regardless, the group decides to stay over for the night to celebrate SUNNY's last day at FARAWAY TOWN, and to be there for the distraught BASIL.

Sunny mental breakdown

Sunny becomes stressed out as he is unable to maintain his composure when fighting against Basil.

After being forced to confront the truth behind MARI's death, SUNNY runs into BASIL's room to try and talk about their traumatic past. However, BASIL is armed with garden shears, and the isolation after the incident as well as the loss of his GRANDMA has driven him insane. BASIL begs SUNNY to not leave him like he did four years ago, and their SOMETHINGS manifest and coax the two into a fight.

The sheer pressure of this situation prevents SUNNY from using any of his SKILLS, leaving him with no choice but to fight. The tension mounts as SUNNY reaches his breaking point, giving way to a unique EMOTION called STRESSED OUT that hasn't appeared anywhere else in the game. Eventually, both boys are so severely injured that they cannot continue fighting, with BASIL having stabbed SUNNY'S right eye with his shears. SUNNY blacks out and both boys are rushed to the HOSPITAL.

All skills, unless stated otherwise, have a 20% variance rate. This means they will do between 80% and 120% of their regular damage.

For the first turn, BASIL will do nothing.

Afterwards, BASIL will continue to attack until using his final attack to automatically end the fight.

STRATEGY[]

SunnyStressedRed

The fight against BASIL is practically scripted. Neither side can inflict enough damage to end the fight quickly enough, and all of SUNNY's SKILLS that have been gained from confronting his fears will automatically fail. In addition, BASIL's attacks will never miss in terms of damage output. In terms of difficulty, this fight is fairly easy. Just keep using your basic attack move.

Failed SKILLS will be removed from the battle menu due to SOMETHING preventing SUNNY from using them, and eventually, you will be left with no option but to use the basic attack move. The "ENERGY" meter is a representation of SUNNY's stress, starting out as 3 and goes up by 1 for every turn that passes. Once the stress bar reaches 10, SUNNY becomes STRESSED OUT, a unique emotion seen nowhere else in the game.

SunnyStabbed

Once SUNNY becomes STRESSED OUT, you can only attack, as even SUNNY's unused SKILLS are rendered inaccessible. Unavoidably, if BASIL's HP is lowered to 1% or SUNNY's is reduced to 2%, BASIL will unleash his final attack, gouging out SUNNY's right eye and reducing his HP to 1. This move will end the battle as both boys pass out from their wounds and are eventually hospitalized.

  • In the game's files, there is an unused image of BASIL's enemy sprite. This one is slightly brighter than the one used in-game, and features an extra eye on his SOMETHING (shown on the right).
    • The overworld sprite of the BASIL's SOMETHING in BLACK SPACE is always shown to have two eyes, sharing it with the unused enemy sprite. However, when appearing in the cutscene of SOMETHING being behind BASIL and STRANGER's enemy sprite, BASIL's SOMETHING only has one eye.
  • The color palette for the three fear scenarios and BASIL's boss fight was originally meant to be red and black. This was changed to a deep dark saturated blue, as OMOCAT wanted to convey a sense of dread and despair.[1]
  • BASIL has an unused attack titled PREEMPTIVE STRIKE. It would only be used at the start of the battle and reduces the target's HP by half. Its formula lists the damage output as (0.5 * Foe's HP).
    • If used in-game, then the text would read out BASIL slices _____'s arm.
ACS Bubble 04
  • The "ENERGY" meter in the battle is referred to as StressBar in game files. In addition, when SUNNY has 10 STRESS, a special event named Release Stress will be automatically activated, inflicting STRESSED OUT on him.
    • The Release Stress event was originally planned to be a FOLLOW-UP, as there exists unused AC skill to activate the event and an unused bubble for a Release Stress FOLLOW-UP in the game's files.
    • The special energy bar from this fight also reappears in the console-exclusive MARI boss fight via the special BASIL RUSH event. It only shows up once she transforms into the HANGING BODY enemy. For that fight, the ENERGY meter always remains at the number it originally had and never goes up.
STRANGER (ENEMY)
  • BASIL's battle sprite is identical to STRANGER's battle sprite. This is intentional since the STRANGER fought in-game uses the same appearance as RW BASIL but slightly darkened and edited.
  • When SUNNY becomes STRESSED OUT, the "ENERGY" meter from HEADSPACE will reveal the words "everything is going to be okay".
