This article contains spoilers of important plot details regarding the plotline of OMORI.

Welcome to BLACK SPACE.
Textbox Hand
— The line that appears upon entering BLACK SPACE.

BLACK SPACE is a location in OMORI. It is the parallel to WHITE SPACE, and harbors SUNNY's repressed fears and memories. The appearance and function of BLACK SPACE differs depending on the ROUTE taken by the player, following either a confined, linear story trajectory or an expansive, non-linear hub which can be accessed at any time.

GEOGRAPHY

Door to Blackspace

The door to BLACK SPACE.

BLACK SPACE takes the form of a small, inverted WHITE SPACE with slightly altered details in scenery and object properties, such as the lack of a hanging lightbulb. The first iteration of the center hub is filled with various dark-colored doors that lead to different rooms. A monochrome picnic basket, a laptop, a tissue box and a sketchbook can be found upon entering the main room. Though not all doors are mandatory to enter, entering a total of eight is required to access the final mandatory BLACK SPACE area. Other than that, the only denizens that wander around the center hub consist of various shadowy figures that speak out cryptic lines relating to OMORI's situation, the fate of BASIL, or hints of HEADSPACE's true purpose behind its dreamlike facade.

BLACK SPACE 2 is less linear and seems to follow a more "Yume Nikki"-esque approach where areas interconnect with each other and form a sprawling labyrinth rather than straightforward progression. Therefore, only the starting sections accessible by doors found in the main BLACK SPACE 2 hub are mentioned in this area. For areas that are deeper in, see FURTHER BLACK SPACE below.

It should also be noted that there are many entrances to BLACK SPACE 2 throughout HEADSPACE, some spawning when you defeat HUMPHREY, and others when you reset the dream world on the OMORI ROUTE. It is even possible for the player to gain access to BLACK SPACE 2 during a SUNNY ROUTE run, most notably during BASIL'S RAFT PATH and FOREST OF STUMPS in BLACK SPACE. For a larger list of all the alternate entrances known, see ALTERNATE ENTRANCES below.

STORY

It is implied that BLACK SPACE lies at the outer bounds of OMORI's dream world and is slowly trickling further inwards. KITE KID describes BLACK SPACE as a "DARK VOID" in the sky. One disturbing fact regarding this eldritch location is that HEADSPACE inhabitants who stay too long in BLACK SPACE transform into disfigured SOMETHINGs.

This is notably seen through one of the BLACK SPACE 2 rooms known as GLITCH MAP, where various glitching HEADSPACE residents end up turning into one of the SOMETHING variants due to BLACK SPACE's overwhelming presence.[1]

SUNNY ROUTE

On the SUNNY ROUTE, OMORI enters BLACK SPACE through a giant hole in the floor of BASIL'S HOUSE after piecing the HANGMAN sentence together. While WHITE SPACE was used by OMORI to repress SOMETHING from SUNNY's mind, BLACK SPACE does the opposite; OMORI is haunted by SOMETHING and STRANGER throughout his exploration of the many doors and areas that inhabit BLACK SPACE. Each door leads to a different manifestation of OMORI's fears and memories, twisted through a grim lens.

After overcoming SOMETHING, SUNNY winds up in a peaceful meadow and returns to BLACK SPACE to recover his memories of MARI's death. The rooms featured further are warped and distorted, reminding him of the incident he repressed four years ago. Each time SUNNY enters a new room, he finds photos containing the rest of his repressed memories.

By the time he collects almost all photos, SUNNY slowly begins to recall what truly happened back then. Upon collecting the final photo near a darkened tree, SUNNY finally remembers the events leading up to MARI's death and the creation of "SOMETHING". This will end the BLACK SPACE segments as SUNNY awakens and has the choice to either save BASIL from his spiraling despair or leave him to suffer alone.

OMORI ROUTE

To regain access to BLACK SPACE, the player must find the three missing SHEET MUSIC located in DEEPER WELL to fight the three SOMETHING bosses hiding within LOST LIBRARY.

After the three SOMETHING bosses have been defeated, simply go back to OMORI's computer in WHITE SPACE, and interact with it to access BLACK SPACE 2. Any door that was not visited during the first visit to BLACK SPACE will be locked and unable to be opened. New doors as part of the hub world will be present. At any time you may use the BLACK SPACE computer to return to WHITE SPACE, and STAB yourself to return as well. This acts as a good way to get out of BLACK SPACE 2 if you get lost or can't return from where you end up.

This second variation of BLACK SPACE, often dubbed as BLACK SPACE 2, acts as a hub connecting to several different rooms, which in turn branch into several deeper pathways. Interactions in these rooms can affect other parts of BLACK SPACE 2.

CHARACTERS

ENEMIES

BLACK SPACE

In regular BLACK SPACE, the areas you go through are entirely linear. Once you find a world's key, RED HANDS will spawn that will take you back to BLACK SPACE. You cannot revisit the area once this happens. It does not matter what doors you choose, as you will always visit these exact rooms in succession: You can skip to CHURCH OF SOMETHING after going through PINK BEACH.

BLACK SPACE 2

Black Space 2 Center Hub

BLACK SPACE 2 can be accessed after resetting HEADSPACE in the OMORI ROUTE. To do so, the DEEPER WELL must be revisited to collect 3 pages of SHEET MUSIC and then brought back to the piano room in the LOST LIBRARY. You then have to refight the three SOMETHING variants SUNNY previously fought. After defeating them all, head over to WHITE SPACE and interact with OMORI's computer, and this will take you to BLACK SPACE 2.

PLEASE BE WARNED that many interactions in BLACK SPACE 2 cause permanent changes to other BLACK SPACE 2 rooms, and most entrances to BLACK SPACE 2 from the DREAM WORLD can only be used once. If you wish to replay some of these events or archive them, it is advisable that you keep a "fresh" save just before doing anything in BLACK SPACE 2.

FURTHER BLACK SPACE

The areas listed below consist of any extra areas regarding both the original BLACK SPACE and BLACK SPACE 2. Most of them are rare to find and contain hidden fragments of the story's hidden secrets.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

LOST FOREST 1

WATER WALKWAY

LOOPING FOREST

WEATHERVANE ISLAND

CLOUD WALKWAY

ALTERNATE ENTRANCES

PLEASE BE WARNED that a large majority of these alternate entrances are only available once per save. While it might seem kind of pointless preserving different ways to get to places that you can normally get to otherwise, it should be noted that a lot of these events have unique changes to the areas once visited. This can include BETA CHARACTER appearances, different NPC dialogue, or even brand new events. Keep this in mind before saving over your files.

The player inventory remains as the DW version when entering BLACK SPACE through an alternate entrance, which allows OMORI to take the BLACK SPACE items to HEADSPACE.

I love you..." up to fifteen times before interacting with the "cliff's edge" on the right hand side. Choose to jump off to your death, finally teleporting you to WATER WALKWAY.

TRIVIA

  • According to OMOCAT, BLACK SPACE serves to counteract lucid dreams and represents one's subconscious. They also stated that BLACK SPACE had the most exciting content to make.[2]
    • Despite having its content drawn from imagination like that of HEADSPACE, OMOCAT conceptualized BLACK SPACE alone instead of brainstorming it with their friends.
    • The first iteration of BLACK SPACE was depicted as an open world where players could wander around endlessly. This was remade into bite-sized ROOMs so the area could be experienced without worrying much about game progression.
      • OMOCAT revealed that the rooms appeared in a random order, describing going through them as "jumping through different pools of consciousness". They eventually decided that the sequence required more emotional impact. Thus, the order of rooms was fixed while retaining the illusion of randomness BLACK SPACE has.
    • The music tracks created for BLACK SPACE rooms inspired their imagery, with the overall inspiration for each room originating from OMOCAT's fears and memories of nightmare-fuel from childhood.
    • OMOCAT mentions that since the BLACK SPACE tracks were created first, they listened to them repeatedly until they got a clear visual on the scenarios and imagery meant for those areas.
  • BLACK SPACE appears to serve as the primary source of SOMETHING and its variants manifesting themselves into HEADSPACE. This is evident by saving BASIL in the OMORI ROUTE, as more SOMETHING variants spawn in different locations in the aftermath.
  • In the 2019 build, BLACK SPACE had a more different layout for some of its rooms. The order for that build consists of the LOOPING BLACK FIELD (1st area), SUBCONSCIOUS SPILL (2nd area), STATIC WORLD (3rd area), CAT DISSECTION (4th area), FOREST OF STUMPS (5th area), CHURCH OF SOMETHING (6th area), with all maps showing BASIL dying shortly afterwards.
  • The wandering STRANGERS in the BLACK SPACE hub use KEL's form, as shown in the game's data.
