— SPROUT MOLE

SPROUT MOLES are a group of characters and NPCs in OMORI. They are a race of "highly intelligent" plant creatures that appear throughout the game in the areas of HEADSPACE. Most of them reside within the SPROUT MOLE VILLAGE, which is connected to SWEETHEART'S CASTLE.

PROFILE[]

APPEARANCE[]

SPROUT MOLES usually resemble brown teardrop-shaped creatures with two stubby feet and a small sprout growing from the top of their heads. They usually wear blank, empty expressions with a gaping mouth, as shown through both their overworld and battle sprites. SPROUT MOLES are also sometimes referred to as "ugly plant creatures", as noted by OMORI, KEL, and BERLY.[1][2][3]

PERSONALITY[]

As described by themselves, SPROUT MOLES are high-functioning and intelligent in terms of character. However, these creatures appear quite scatterbrained most of the time when trying to handle certain tasks, which slightly contradicts their claims of them being intelligent.

This applies to most SPROUT MOLES encountered throughout the game. A notable trait associated with most of them is that they appear obsessed with SWEETHEART, to the point of blindly following her out of loyalty or admiration. Although there are a few exceptions such as the devious SHADY MOLE and the three SIR MAXIMUSES. Those SPROUT MOLES are capable of acting far more intelligently than any other regular SPROUT MOLE.

SPROUT MOLES are also obsessed with TOFU, to the point of talking about it all the time and even asking the party to deliver some to them in certain sidequests. It is also noteworthy that whenever a SPROUT MOLE becomes lost, they end up becoming hostile in the form of LOST SPROUT MOLES.

STORY[]

PROLOGUE[]

SPROUT MOLES are encountered throughout the areas of HEADSPACE, either as non-violent NPCs or hostile enemies roaming the overworld. The first few appear within the path to BASIL'S HOUSE, stomping on BASIL's flowers and attacking the party. The group later encounters a large SPROUT MOLE known as YE OLD SPROUT. After learning the basic mechanics of the ENERGY system from HERO, the group manages to vanquish YE OLD SPROUT. After BASIL vanishes from HEADSPACE, the group can encounter more SPROUT MOLES from that point on.

Throughout VAST FOREST, various roaming LOST SPROUT MOLES can be seen roaming around as common enemies for the area alongside FOREST BUNNIES. The first friendly SPROUT MOLE can be found in the line at VAST FOREST's TRAIN STATION, where they reveal to OMORI and friends how becoming lost makes SPROUT MOLES hostile. They realize they just so happen to be lost, resulting in them attacking the group.

In OTHERWORLD, there is an area where cutting through the cones with OMORI in lead will allow players to access a MELON and a SPROUT MOLE known as LONE MOLE. Interacting with LONE MOLE will cause it to get upset with you for cutting down the cones. The interaction ends with the party transported to the entrance of the cone area with the cones around the entrance and the SPROUT MOLE being reset. This will grant the player the WHAT'S THE BIG IDEA!?!? achievement upon completion.

Within the CATTAIL FIELD, a seemingly abandoned crater houses a few SPROUT MOLE NPCs, known as the SPROUT MOLE COLONY. These SPROUT MOLES are some of the few who chose to remain behind during the great SPROUT MOLE migration. BATZY reveals that she hopes her SPROUT MOLE friends from the other location will slowly return to their old home. These words slowly become true as more SPROUT MOLES return to the colony after SWEETHEART's show ends for good.

ALL ROUTES[]

THREE DAYS LEFT[]

A group of SPROUT MOLES can later be found talking about SWEETHEART's show at the start of THREE DAYS LEFT, revealing they have tickets to it. They realize they are lost, leading them to charge at OMORI and friends after seeing them. Defeating them allows the group to obtain four SHOW TICKETS for the upcoming show.

In PYREFLY FOREST, various SPROUT MOLES are found dead upon reaching the end of the forest. Most of them will not say anything with the exception of one, who warns OMORI and his party to run while they still can. This is revealed to be due to KING CRAWLER devouring most of the SPROUT MOLES residing within the forest. Defeating KING CRAWLER yields four SPROUT MOLE MASKS, which are apparently made out of four dead SPROUT MOLES as revealed in the item's flavor text.

An entire underground village of SPROUT MOLES can be found at the end of the forest, known as the SPROUT MOLE VILLAGE. From there, many SPROUT MOLES are seen inhabiting that area, as it turns out that most of them have migrated from the SPROUT MOLE COLONY to form a civilization below the forest. This is also where SWEETHEART'S CASTLE can be accessed, and that many SPROUT MOLES are SWEETHEART's adoring fans.

Inside of SWEETHEART'S CASTLE, various SPROUT MOLES are shown either organizing events for SWEETHEART's upcoming show or working under SWEETHEART's command to protect the castle. These notably include the royal guard consisting of HAROLD, MARSHA, THERESE, and LUCIUS. Some such as CASTELLA or VIRTUOSO MOLE are occupied with handling tasks SWEETHEART gave them for hew show. The mid-boss SPROUT MOLES that occasionally block the party's way in the castle consist of three members of the SIR MAXIMUS lineage.

TWO DAYS LEFT[]

A lone SPROUT MOLE can later be found inside HUMPHREY, complaining about being stuck inside the whale. Another SPROUT MOLE, named BIG MOLIO, appears floating down within the river section of MEDUSA's sector. Saving BIG MOLIO will allow him to return the favor by crushing EXPERIMENT 667 in MARINA's sector. This action also leads to BIG MOLIO migrating back to the SPROUT MOLE COLONY.

OTHER SPROUT MOLES[]

Although not originally encountered in the areas of BLACK SPACE, a few SPROUT MOLES appear within BLACK SPACE 2 as regular NPCs. In the CORRUPTED JUNKYARD, a SPROUT MOLE named PILLOW HIDER is revealed to have hidden a TOMATOGIRL's pillow and can occasionally warp in-and-out of reality. Some SPROUT MOLES appear in the next room, all greeting OMORI by saying his name when spoken to.

OMORI ROUTE[]

ONE DAY LEFT[]

A notable member of the SPROUT MOLE race found at the CLOUD WALKWAY is OMOLI, a monochrome SPROUT MOLE who resembles OMORI in appearance. OMOLI desires to have more money, and the player can do so by giving him TWENTY DOLLARS from MONEY SPACE. Deep within the GLITCH MAP area, YE OLD SPROUT is found spinning around nonstop. It is revealed there that YE OLD SPROUT is aware that OMORI killed him and speaks in a rather bitter tone towards the young boy if spoken to.

NOTABLE MEMBERS[]

Throughout the game, many SPROUT MOLES using different names can be found as NPCs that offer some dialogue or appear as hostile enemies that can be fought in the overworld. These include the following characters and enemies:

TRIVIA[]

  • Alongside the BUNNY enemies and SNALEY, SPROUT MOLES are the most recurring NPCs encountered in the game.
  • SPROUT MOLES are implied to originate from the fictional namesake in the REAL WORLD. An in-universe arcade game called SPROUT MOLE EATER can be found in GINO'S, and during the sorting segment on the OMORI ROUTE, SUNNY can find his old SPROUT MOLE PLUSH from the large cardboard box.
  • KEL drew a SPROUT MOLE on his school desk during his childhood, this can be seen from a pond in LOST FOREST 1 and Kel's Desk in LOOPING FOREST.[4]
  • SPROUT MOLES are implied to grow from TOFU, despite the fact that most of them enjoy eating and talking about their trademark food. It is also unknown if SPROUT MOLES are aware of their origins.
  • A SPROUT MOLE's sound byte when speaking actually has two variants; one of them being randomly used in the game. They are listed as SE sprout mole1 and SE sprout mole2.[5]
