VAST FOREST is the first primary location the group navigates within the world of HEADSPACE in OMORI. It is a large, wide-open forest filled with a peaceful atmosphere and various creatures that roam around its grassy fields.
GEOGRAPHY[]
VAST FOREST can be first accessed by entering through the tree stump found in the center of HEADSPACE, and links back to the NEIGHBOR'S ROOM. To the west of the tree stump is PYREFLY FOREST, to the north is the NORTH LAKE and UNDERWATER HIGHWAY, and to the east is a ladder leading up to OTHERWORLD.
Heading down south is where the FOREST PLAYGROUND and many other differing pathways are located. There is also a TRAIN STATION that links this location to ORANGE OASIS, which can be used on THREE DAYS LEFT after defeating SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND during the PROLOGUE.
When OMORI is in the lead, players can cut away brambles to reach different areas in the map. Players are able to access the eastern half of the VAST FOREST, where you can find SHADOW DOG's grotto. Directly north of SHADOW DOG's grotto, you will find a ladder that leads to PINWHEEL FOREST where players can face KITE KID. Continuing east causes the player to loop around to the west side of the VAST FOREST, near the TRAIN STATION.
STORY[]
PROLOGUE[]
After making plans to meet up with MARI and BASIL, OMORI and his friends head off to meet them at the playground. Upon arriving there, the friend group briefly converses and later looks at BASIL's PHOTO ALBUM. Afterwards, BASIL invites the others over to his home but they end up playing a game of hide-and-seek due to BERLY pestering them. Once the group finishes dealing with BERLY's antics and saving BASIL from BOSS, they head over to BASIL's HOUSE.
On their way there, BASIL describes the flowers he's been watering and how each one of them reminds him of his friends. This introduces a mechanic where the player must water BASIL's flowers every time they return to HEADSPACE. Watering them will grant boost in HP for any party member. Along with that, HERO teaches the group how to fight enemies using EMOTIONS to their advantage. They also manage to take out YE OLD SPROUT, who was blocking the entrance to BASIL's HOUSE.
Outside of BASIL'S HOUSE, AUBREY and KEL get into another one of their fights, which causes several pictures to be knocked out of BASIL'S PHOTO ALBUM. OMORI assists BASIL in fixing his album, after which a photo of a broken violin BASIL does not recognize falls out of the album. Upon seeing what the photo shows, BASIL begins to panic and attempts to tell OMORI something but the screen distorts violently. OMORI himself is suddenly thrusted back into WHITE SPACE, with door to NEIGHBOR'S ROOM missing and the only option being to STAB himself to awaken SUNNY.
Once SUNNY goes back to sleep after vanquishing his fear of heights, OMORI reawakens in WHITE SPACE. He regroups with his friends, and together they begin their search for the missing BASIL while MARI decides to stay near her picnic blanket. They continue searching every area within the forest while fighting off several enemies.
Much to the group's dismay, BASIL isn't found anywhere. This leads them to navigate the next location BASIL might've winded up at: OTHERWORLD. Once OMORI succeeds in conquering his fear of heights, the group leaves VAST FOREST to travel through more of HEADSPACE's worlds to search for BASIL.
THREE DAYS LEFT[]
After overcoming SOMETHING IN THE WALLS on either ROUTE, SUNNY heads back to sleep. He briefly remembers his first time entering WHITE SPACE before allowing OMORI to awaken once more. As usual, OMORI regroups with his friends to search for BASIL. They first head over to the FOREST PLAYGROUND to meet up with MARI as she is worried about OMORI. After conversing with MARI about where to go next, the group decides to head west of the tree stump area: PYREFLY FOREST.
Although HERO appears anxious about going there due to his fear of spiders, MARI encourages him to face his fears as OMORI has done the same with his fear of heights. As the group prepares to leave, they encounter a group of SPROUT MOLES who are currently headed towards somewhere but they forget where they're headed.
They immediately attack the party but are defeated. Upon defeat, the group collects the SPROUT MOLES' SHOW TICKETS for a show titled SWEETHEART'S QUEST FOR HEARTS, which is located at the duchess' castle. The group decides to attend that show to gain more info on BASIL's whereabouts.
TWO DAYS LEFT[]
Upon returning to HEADSPACE once more, OMORI finds out that the playground he and his friends often visited is completely abandoned. It is also revealed that VAST FOREST and its surrounding areas are covered in thick fog. The only option is to head up north, where OMORI will find someone waiting for him depending on the route the player is currently on. This will initiate the NORTH LAKE sequence.
After defeating HUMPHREY, the group is instructed to return to the heart of VAST FOREST by a mysterious voice within the DEEPER WELL once they've collected the necessary HANGMAN Keys to progress further. Once the HANGMAN is complete, the surroundings of BASIL'S HOUSE become deathly and foreboding, and its floor caves in, revealing the entry to BLACK SPACE.
Taking the road to his house shows that all his flowers have withered away, no longer responding to any attempts to water them and that the walk through the forest has become abnormally long as the trees closer to his house are gradually dying. Upon reaching the house, a frightened AUBREY begs OMORI to turn back, but with nowhere else that leads forward, OMORI takes the plunge, entering BLACK SPACE to “rescue” BASIL.
ONE DAY LEFT[]
If the player is on the OMORI ROUTE, then VAST FOREST and the rest of HEADSPACE can be explored again. After rescuing BASIL and sleeping in the NEIGHBOR'S BEDROOM, OMORI, now taking control of SUNNY's body, awakens in his room to finish the last of his chores before returning to sleep. OMORI once again awakens in WHITE SPACE and goes through the white door to be greeted by his friends.
They repeat dialogue from the very beginning of the game before setting off to meet with MARI and BASIL again in the FOREST PLAYGROUND. Interacting with BASIL after the cutscene will grant you a FLOWER CROWN as the boy mentions he'll cherish OMORI and the others forever in his heart.
There are a few changes added to VAST FOREST, the notable one being that BASIL appears to have never discovered the truth and the addition of four new charms located in his house. This "reset" also restores BASIL's house and garden back to normal. However, a few SOMETHING variants have manifested themselves within the FOGGY BRIDGE after the reset and can be fought if the group wants to fight them.
NOTABLE AREAS[]
STUMP ENTRANCE[]
The STUMP ENTRANCE is the first area the group visits when entering HEADSPACE from the NEIGHBOR'S ROOM. A short cutscene will play out, involving the group exiting from the colorful stump.
Once KEL pulls AUBREY out of the stump, this will determine the player's WTF variable, ranging from 1 to 13. The WTF VALUE overall adds a few things that change depending on it; basically, the higher your 'WTF' value, the more random occurrences will happen.
There are four pathways available from this area. Heading south leads to the FOREST PLAYGROUND, where MARI and BASIL are first found alongside a few other residents of the forest. Heading north brings the player to the NORTH COAST and by extension, the NORTH LAKE. Heading east leads to OTHERWORLD, while heading west leads to PYREFLY FOREST.
These particular locations are accessible in later segments of the game. One thing to note is that after sleeping for the first time as SUNNY in the REAL WORLD, the A Key for the HANGMAN appears outside of the stump upon returning to HEADSPACE.
FOREST PLAYGROUND[]
The FOREST PLAYGROUND is a large, wide-open playground located south of the STUMP ENTRANCE. Many of OMORI's friends can be found playing here, including his best friend BASIL and his older sister MARI.
At the north entrance of the area, one of MARI's various picnics is set up on the left. The first floating mirror within HEADSPACE can be interacted here. There are many toys, trees, eggs, and characters scattered around the space. It is filled with many playground essentials such as swings, monkey bars, a slide, a tetherball pole, and hopscotch.
The top right corner of the area features a poster that constantly changes as the story progresses, ranging from a wanted poster of BOSS to a promotion of the show SWEETHEART's QUEST FOR HEARTS. There is also a nearby MAILBOX that sells items consisting of CANDY, APPLE JUICE, JACKS and PRESENTS. The first floating mirror can be interacted here as well.
OMORI can also interact with SHAWN and REN to obtain the skill OBSERVE. The first quest that can be completed here is BERLY'S LOST BALL, in which BERLY will join the party in search of the missing tetherball within VAST FOREST. Completing this quest will grant AUBREY the skill HEADBUTT and a BUTT CERTIFICATE. Interacting with BERLY again afterwards increases AUBREY's MP by 20 JUICE.
The second quest that can be initiated here is DAISY'S DILEMMA. To complete it, the group must head over to OTHERWORLD's JUNKYARD to dig out the FLOWER PUZZLE needed for completion and acquiring the DAISY (CHARM) once OMORI overcomes his fear of heights.
PATH TO BASIL[]
The PATH TO BASIL is the map located south of the FOREST PLAYGROUND in the game's data. It contains a nearby stop for PLUTO'S SPACELINE and two pathways for the east and west sections of VAST FOREST.
Heading down south reveals six plants patches made by BASIL himself that consist of a mechanic where the player must water BASIL's plants every time they return to HEADSPACE. This can be done before entering HUMPHREY.
Watering them will grant boost in HP for any party member. Over time, the plants will decay gradually, due to BASIL being absent to take care of them.
It is recommended to water them every time the player returns to HEADSPACE for STAT boosts. The plants located there are associated with all the main characters. The sunflowers represents BASIL[1], lily of the valley for MARI[2], gladiolus for AUBREY[3], roses for HERO[4], cactus for KEL[5], and lastly the tulip for SUNNY.[6][7]
Watering any decayed plants associated with a party member will grant them more HP. However, OMORI can only gain hearts from the tulip, sunflower, and the lily of the valley.
Entering the entrance to BASIL'S HOUSE will reveal a giant old shoe as his home. Inside of BASIL'S HOUSE contains his peaceful-designed room filled with plants and books. The group will first come here during the PROLOGUE to help BASIL fix his PHOTO ALBUM. If the group revisits the area after BASIL disappears, the house and its surrounding will slowly rot away, eventually revealing an entrance to BLACK SPACE after collecting all HANGMAN letters.
If the player pursues the OMORI ROUTE, then the house will revert back to its original state and now has four watermelons containing flower headbands representing each of OMORI's party members.
VAST FOREST WEST[]
VAST FOREST WEST is the west portion of the location, accessed by heading west of the sign within the PATH TO BASIL. Upon arriving here for the first time, another short cutscene will play out, involving the group trying to call out for the missing BASIL, with little effect even with HECTOR's help much to KEL's dismay.
This is the first proper area the group can explore with multiple enemies and watermelons scattered throughout the forest. The enemies here consist of the FOREST BUNNY and LOST SPROUT MOLE, both serving as starting enemies for the group to defeat for leveling themselves up. In addition, a hidden enemy known as the BIG STRONG TREE can be found here, though encountering it is optional, and defeating it will cause it to vanish from the overworld. A rare enemy known as the FOREST BUNNY? can be fought at the northeast corner of the map. You can also find one of the YOUNG SHROOMS in the southeast corners of the map.
Other than that, there are several pathways to lead to different subareas. Heading northwest will lead to the forest's local TRAIN STATION, while continuing north brings the group to further sections of the forest. The bottom left section of this area is where BERLY's LOST BALL can be found, as well as one of the four alcoves.
The watermelons here contain the following objects: CANDY, BRACELET, JACKS, BANANA SMOOTHIE, 3-LEAF CLOVER, SPARKLER, TOFU, CHOCOLATE, CHERRY SODA, LIFE JAM, POETRY BOOK, and APPLE JUICE.
TRAIN STATION[]
The TRAIN STATION is an area located within the west area of VAST FOREST. During the PROLOGUE, the station is filled with characters waiting in line for the train. MR. OUTBACK prevents OMORI from walking close to the train and LEMON JASH doesn't allow the group to budge and get a lemonade.
Some of these characters include LEAFIE, GIBS THE STATIONARY MUSICIAN, MR. OUTBACK, and a disguised SWEETHEART who appears only after defeating CAPT. SPACEBOY. There are three watermelons that contain POPCORN, SPARKLER, and PLUM JUICE.
It is until after completing the PROLOGUE by defeating SPACE EX-BOYFRIEND shall this area become almost entirely empty, leaving only a few NPCs remaining. This also means that the party is able to board the TRAIN to ORANGE OASIS by using the TRAIN PASS from CAPT. SPACEBOY himself.
The first time the party enters the TRAIN involves them temporarily being stuck in an infinite loop before the screen begins to black out. Before that, they can only interact with some shadowy figures called STRANGERS. Eventually, after running in one direction for a while, the party will encounter DOROTHI, a SOMETHING variant that blocks their way from exiting the TRAIN. After defeating it, the TRAIN will be filled with various floating TOASTS, and the party can leave it behind to access the optional location ORANGE OASIS.
EAST COAST[]
The EAST COAST is located east of VAST FOREST WEST and west of the bridge. When entering here or WEST COAST for the first time, the BGM changes to a more somber, softer song as the group nears the bridge of the forest. This song is also more prominently played in NORTH LAKE.
From here, a single LOST SPROUT MOLE can be fought here. Several twigs are scattered around the area, in which OMORI can use his tag ability to cut them down to size. One of ABBI's many tentacles is found near the pier. Only after defeating ABBI and choosing to spare her, will the TENTACLE grant you the BASKETBALL weapon, which serves as KEL's ultimate weapon as it gives him a large boost for most of his stats when equipped.
Up above is the second forest alcove, where the WISE ROCK resides. Go inside and the player can interact with the WISE ROCK for some advice, ranging on how much the party pays him in CLAMS. Other than that, the only option within this small area is to continue to the bridge or head back to the FOREST PLAYGROUND.
VAST FOREST EAST[]
VAST FOREST EAST is the east portion of the location, accessed by heading east of the sign within the PATH TO BASIL and PLUTO'S SPACELINE. This section of the forest has a similar layout to VAST FOREST WEST, containing the same enemies encountered before. A few watermelons are scattered here, holding CANDY, DANDELION, JACKS, and APPLE JUICE.
There are a few interesting things the player can do within this area. Heading northeast of the starting will bring the group to another ladder leading up to the floating PINWHEEL FOREST. Two forest alcoves are located here as well.
The one on the easternmost area is where the SHADOW DOG can be found and interacted with. The one on the northwest corner features an ominous secret regarding the truth and SOMETHING. Other than that, the player can continue exploring the area or simply head back to the FOREST PLAYGROUND to recover and regroup.
PINWHEEL FOREST[]
PINWHEEL FOREST, also known as the FLOATING FOREST, is a high-up area with a foggy atmosphere and many clouds covering the area. The area can be accessed via a ladder located in the east section of VAST FOREST, only after OMORI has conquered his fear of heights via SOMETHING IN THE DARK's defeat in the SUNNY'S HOUSE. It also notably has a few pinwheels sprinkled with trees populating its surroundings.
In the north, MARI has set up her picnic basket and KITE KID can be encountered there as well. PROPELLER GHOST is found here along with the C key needed for the HANGMAN challenge. This place is also great for flying kites as shown by KITE KID and his kite.
There is also a pinwheel that needs fixing and that can be done by TAGGING KEL to chuck his rubber ball straight at it. This will cause a WATERMELON to fall out of the pinwheel, which grants the party a plate of SPAGHETTI.
KITE KID's defeat dialogue will change depending on if the pinwheel is fixed or not. In addition, the party can also fly their kites after defeating KITE KID as a special breaktime event. If the player hasn't defeated KITE KID before ONE DAY LEFT, a stronger version of his boss fight can be done on the OMORI ROUTE's epilogue.
FOGGY BRIDGE[]
The FOGGY BRIDGE, also known as EAST FOREST BRIDGE in the game's data, connects the two sides of VAST FOREST and the pier.
When entering here during the PROLOGUE, the party realizes that they can't find BASIL anywhere within VAST FOREST. Along with that, the party can also obtain the B key required for the HANGMAN.
The only thing the player can do is continue moving east or west but heading up north brings the player to another area of the bridge.
VAST FOREST PIER[]
Moving up north from the middle of the bridge accesses the pier, labeled as VAST FOREST PIER in the game's data. The pier features multiple wooden walkways and trees surrounding its edges.
Coming here the first time before entering OTHERWORLD will show STRANGER in an unreachable area near the R key. This area can later be accessed through a ladder found in LAST RESORT's construction site.
On ONE DAY LEFT, the area will be populated with multiple SALLIS and CINDIS after clearing BLACK SPACE and rescuing BASIL. The player can initiate an encounter against the two SOMETHING variants but defeating them won't affect any gameplay matters.
WEST COAST[]
The WEST COAST is located west of VAST FOREST EAST and east of the bridge. Like with the EAST COAST, entering here for the first time changes the BGM to a more somber, softer song.
From here, a single LOST SPROUT MOLE can be fought here. A watermelon containing a GLASS BOTTLE can be found hidden behind a tree. Other than that, the player can either continue heading to their destination or return back to the playground to recover and regroup.
FOREST ALCOVES[]
The FOREST ALCOVES are located within the depths of VAST FOREST. There are a total of four alcoves hidden throughout its areas, which can either contain characters, items, or special events that may correlate with the game's story or something ominous in the background. The following alcoves are listed down below:
SHADOW DOG ALCOVE[]
The SHADOW DOG grotto is found in the easternmost area. When entering the alcove, which resembles a typical doghouse, there is a 1/3 chance that the SHADOW DOG will appear and bark at the group.
The player can interact with it for a chance to obtain any of the following items: a CAN, RUBBER BAND, LIFE JAM, CHERRY SODA, HOT DOG, or SPARKLER. Doing this the first time will yield the Good Dog achievement.
WISE ROCK ALCOVE[]
The alcove where the WISE ROCK resides is in the west area, located near the FOGGY BRIDGE. Interacting with it allows the player the option to spend a specific number of CLAMS in exchange for some advice.
There are only three types of advice the WISE ROCK will speak out: BAD ADVICE (3 CLAMS), OKAY ADVICE (10 CLAMS), and GOOD ADVICE (30 CLAMS). The advice the WISE ROCK gives to the party tends to vary from explaining hints of the game's backstory to blunt responses.
SHROOM ALCOVE[]
The shroom alcove is found right near the area where the missing tetherball can be found for the BERLY'S LOST BALL sidequest. After learning how to cut hard-structured objects in SWEETHEART'S CASTLE from J. SHROOM, OMORI can now cut open YOUNG SHROOM.
Doing so will reward the group with a DANDELION and access to a higher area by jumping on YOUNG SHROOM's mushroom cap. From there, the player can interact with several pink-colored flowers known as BUDGIRLS.
The middle one will grant the party varying types of snacks when interacted with. Doing so will have an 80% chance of receiving nothing and a 20% chance of obtaining a MANGO SMOOTHIE, S.BERRY SMOOTHIE, BERRY SMOOTHIE, or a MELON SMOOTHIE. This can be done multiple times.
NANCI ALCOVE[]
The final alcove is the one with a hidden tree holding a tire. This is found in the top left corner of VAST FOREST's east area. Entering there the first time, SOMETHING is briefly seen hovering near the tree. Getting close to SOMETHING will result in it quickly disappearing.
After defeating HUMPHREY, interacting with the tree will cause eyes and hands to appear around the screen, and a black silhouette of hanged MARI will appear with the white eye. This hallucination quickly disappears afterwards, and the tire swing will disappear.
Upon reentering the area, NANCI will appear roaming around the tree and can be fought there. Defeating it and reentering the alcove will cause NANCI to respawn, allowing the player to refight it as many times as they want to.

TRIVIA[]
- VAST FOREST is a pun of the name OMORI, as 大森 (can be pronounced as "ōmori") reads as "VAST FOREST" in Japanese.[8]
- In the game's data, most of VAST FOREST's areas are named PINWHEEL FOREST.[9]
- VAST FOREST is one of the few explorable areas in the 2018 demo. Most of its areas had a different layout in comparison to the ones currently seen in the 2020 release.
- The battle BGM of this area originally sounded different in the 2018 demo, later replaced with a more lively, energetic BGM. This version was used for KITE KID and PYREFLY FOREST's battle BGMs.
- It is possible that VAST FOREST is inspired by the HANGOUT SPOT's secret lake, evident by it being the only area within FARAWAY TOWN to have a forest surrounding the place and the lake briefly appearing in the 2018 demo.
- The main PHOTO ALBUM photos from HEADSPACE are taken in this location.
- BASIL'S GRANDMA originally had a HEADSPACE counterpart that appeared in this area, in which she asked OMORI and friends to help her find BASIL in the 2018 demo. This variant was scrapped but remnants of it still exist via the STRANGER at NORTH LAKE if the WTF VALUE is greater than or equal to six.
- The overall structure of the FOREST PLAYGROUND presumably takes inspiration from FARAWAY PARK, evident by the equipment and the characters that show up most of the time.
- There is an unused poster that could've showed up at the start of TWO DAYS LEFT. This one features the list of children that MR. JAWSUM tricked into working for him at LAST RESORT.
- HUMPHREY and WEEPING WILLOW were originally placed near a lake within the VAST FOREST, as shown in the 2018 demo. However, both characters were moved to separate locations in the game's full release.
- At the TRAIN STATION, MEGAPHONE was originally meant to be there during the PROLOGUE according to the game's data. In the full 2020 game, he only appears as a cameo within MEDUSA's laboratory in one of the test tubes.
- In the 2018 demo, there exists a sidequest titled WEAK WINDS, given by KITE KID after his defeat. The player would have to investigate the pinwheels as KITE KID feels that something is wrong with one of them. In the full game, this objective is entirely removed.
- However, data containing MARI's commentary on the sidequest still exists in the game's files.
- VAST FOREST has the most SOMETHING variants that can be fought in-game, the other location being the LOST LIBRARY.
- Within the game files, there is data for an unused set of cutscenes that would have fleshed out the EMPTY HOUSE quest in its lead-up to BLACK SPACE. This was cut, presumably due to inconsistencies with the rest of the game.
- The plants in PATH TO BASIL will decay faster when OMORI is outside of VAST FOREST, SUNNY is outside of his house and each fear boss has been defeated. It is notable that all of these factors have a connection to HEADSPACE BASIL being forgotten.
- While testing the Japanese version of the game, OMOCAT mentioned that she encountered a bug where it started snowing within VAST FOREST.[10]
- The 2018 demo originally had a hidden ending that can be done in the TRAIN STATION. If the player chooses to wait in line and do nothing for a total of five hours, this will end the demo with OMORI and friends taking the train, and eventually finding BASIL offscreen.[11]
- In the game's files, the STRANGERS in VAST FOREST's TRAIN were originally meant to have more variation. However only one of the four sprites shown for the TRAIN STRANGER was used.
- According to the file "$DW_VF_TrainPassengers", the STRANGERS that appeared in VAST FOREST's TRAIN were originally planned to have different designs. In the final game, only one of the four designs is used. The game's data also refers to them as patrons.

- ↑ BASIL: These are sunflowers. They're called that because they always face towards the sun. That's how I want to be like... someone who always sees the bright side of things.
- ↑ BASIL: These flowers are called lily of the valley. It's said that they're able to ward off evil spirits and help people see a brighter future... I guess that's why they remind me of MARI. I can always count on her to help me stay positive.

Someone who is honest, with strong moral values... Someone who stands by their convictions... The gladiolus reminds me of AUBREY, because she's always true to herself.
- ↑ BASIL: Roses come in many different colors and have their own unique meanings. Pink roses symbolize admiration... Orange roses symbolize passion... Yellow roses symbolize friendship... and the list goes on. HERO doesn't remind me of any rose in particular. I think HERO is like all roses, because he's versatile and universally loved.
