This article is about SOMETHING IN THE DARK. For more info on SOMETHING and its variants, see the category page.

SOMETHING IN THE DARK, also known as FEAR OF HEIGHTS and HEIGHTS, is an enemy in OMORI and one of the many variants of SOMETHING that can be fought in-game.

PROFILE[]

SOMETHING IN THE DARK resembles a large grinning face made out of a rock or clay-like material. Its eyes resemble SOMETHING's single eye. Seven blue, realistic outstretched hands appear to be emanating from it.

STORY[]

PROLOGUE[]

When SUNNY wakes up for the first time after BASIL disappears from HEADSPACE, he attempts to go downstairs to eat. At the top of the stairs, SUNNY becomes dizzy due to his fear of heights and sleeps again for a short time. After waking up, he descends down the stairs as they become abnormally long, with black outstretched hands appearing on all sides of the screen.

After picking up a SHINY KNIFE on his way down, a large realistic hand appears behind SUNNY, slowly approaching him. When the hand reaches SUNNY, the battle with SOMETHING IN THE DARK will initiate. SUNNY's attacks do nothing, but a mysterious voice calls out to him, reminding him how to CALM DOWN. Using CALM DOWN ends the battle, the environment returns to normal, and SUNNY overcomes his fear of heights.

SUNNY ROUTE[]

After SUNNY destroys the lightbulb in WHITE SPACE on ONE DAY LEFT, he is transported to a dark room with a single beam of light, initiating a battle with SOMETHING. During the battle, SUNNY has to face SOMETHING IN THE DARK, which is defeated the same way as the first battle with it.

OMORI ROUTE[]

After saving BASIL in BLACK SPACE and resetting HEADSPACE, SOMETHING IN THE DARK, now titled HEIGHTS in the game's data, can be fought again in the LOST LIBRARY alongside the previous two variants after bringing the SHEET MUSIC to the piano. Unlike in the SUNNY ROUTE, it can be damaged. When defeated, OMORI will learn the skill VERTIGO. Defeating it is necessary to obtain the Repressed achievement and enter BLACK SPACE 2.

AI[]

SKILL BEHAVIOR
For the first to third, and sixth to eighth turns, SOMETHING will attack the player using DARK ATTACK, reducing 15% of their maximum HP.

For the fourth, fifth, ninth and tenth turns, SOMETHING will do nothing.

If the fight goes beyond ten turns and SUNNY hasn't used CALM DOWN, SOMETHING will inflict 143 damage via its FINAL ATTACK to SUNNY, causing a GAME OVER.

Every turn, each enemy will start by trying to use the skill listed at the top. If the calculation fails, they move on to the second skill and so on, until reaching the final skill which is guaranteed to activate. Each calculation is done independently from the previous ones, so the added percentage is not 100%.

If the fight goes beyond ten turns, SOMETHING will inflict 999 damage to all party members, causing a GAME OVER.

STRATEGY[]

Serving as the first boss fight in FARAWAY TOWN, SOMETHING IN THE DARK introduces the battle system that SUNNY uses in combat. Unlike the titular character OMORI, SUNNY lacks all of the former's unique SKILLS as this fight takes place in reality, not in the imaginary world of HEADSPACE. He will also start off the battle as AFRAID, making him unable to use any of his SKILLS. The only option for the first few turns is to attack.

However, none of SUNNY's attacks will work on SOMETHING IN THE DARK. Instead, SUNNY must use the CALM DOWN skill learned at the end of the fifth turn. Doing so will allow him to vanquish SOMETHING IN THE DARK, thus automatically ending the fight. If he doesn't use CALM DOWN by the tenth turn, SOMETHING IN THE DARK will use its final attack, dealing 143 damage to SUNNY and causing a GAME OVER as he is sent falling down to his presumed death.

In the OMORI ROUTE, SOMETHING IN THE DARK works exactly like the other fear related bosses in LOST LIBRARY. Like with its SUNNY ROUTE variant, the group must defeat it within ten turns using any powerful SKILLs used to lower its defense and attack. It also has more attacks to strengthen its defense while inflicting AFRAID as well. If not defeated within ten turns, the party will take 999 damage, resulting in a GAME OVER, ignoring OMORI's plot armor.

Since SOMETHING IN THE DARK's damage output is relatively mild, it is recommended to emphasize attack over defense in this fight. KEL should use an AIR HORN on the first turn of the fight to make the party ANGRY, removing the mass AFRAID status and boosting everyone's damage output. AUBREY and HERO can use POWER HIT and TENDERIZE, respectively, to soften up SOMETHING IN THE DARK's defenses. OMORI can use RED HANDS to dish out immense amounts of damage to SOMETHING IN THE DARK, especially if KEL uses TICKLE to guarantee critical hits. If it becomes necessary to heal a party member, it may be a good idea to rely on items over HERO's skills, as if SOMETHING shoves him, he may waste his turn.

TRIVIA[]

  • In-game, it is simply known as SOMETHING.
  • The LOST LIBRARY variant of this enemy is referred to as HEIGHTS in the game's data.
  • An early version of SOMETHING IN THE DARK appears in the 2017 trailer, dubbed FEAR OF DARK. All of its coding is removed in the game's final release but still exists within the demo's coding.
    • Unlike its final version, FEAR OF DARK has 99999 HP, 0 MP, 10 ATK, 10 DEF, 10 SPD, and 10 LCK.
  • There is an unused attack skill titled RELEASE ANGER, where SOMETHING IN THE DARK would unleash an RELEASE ATTACK based attack which deals heavy damage to the party.
    • If used in-game, the text would read: "SOMETHING took its anger out on everyone!"
  • The color palette for the three fear scenarios and BASIL's boss fight was originally meant to be red and black. This was changed to a deep dark saturated blue as OMOCAT wanted to convey a sense of dread and despair.[1]
  • SOMETHING IN THE DARK's battle theme is named Acrophobia, referencing how SUNNY likely has an irrational fear of heights.
  • If SUNNY does not calm down 10 turns after learning it, he'll take 143 damage from SOMETHING IN THE DARK. The number 143 can mean "I love you" and this only happens in the fight at SUNNY'S HOUSE.
    • In addition, the background featuring the endless stairs will slowly fade into a dark background if the fight continues much longer after learning CALM DOWN. This is also exclusive to the fight in SUNNY'S HOUSE.
  • In the game's data, SOMETHING IN THE DARK is supposed to grant the player 10000 EXP and 1000 CLAM during its fight in LOST LIBRARY but this does not happen since the fight abruptly ends once the player defeats the entity.
  • In the game's data, HEIGHTS and PERFECTHEART are the only two enemies whose skills are with description.
    • REDUCE ATTACK ALL: Grabs everyones Arms
    • DEFENCE UP: The fear grows larger
    • SHOVE: Shoves target down the stairs
  • Before the battle, the area where it is encountered takes place on the stairs with long outstretched arms emanating from the bottom, which may be based off of The Staircase of Hands from Yume Nikki.
