— KEEPER OF THE CASTLE

KEEPER OF THE CASTLE is a character and NPC in OMORI. It is known to hold various cryptic secrets behind the origins of how SWEETHEART'S CASTLE came to be.

APPEARANCE[]

The KEEPER OF THE CASTLE is a long, shadowy creature made out of a dark substance. Its overall appearance seems to resemble a distorted tree or possibly a noose. Upon close inspection, the most notable feature of the KEEPER OF THE CASTLE is its white-colored face or eye with what appears to be three small dots/pupils.

PERSONALITY[]

As shown in its interactions with OMORI and his friends, the KEEPER OF THE CASTLE is rather mysterious, holding many secrets regarding the origin of the castle it resides in. It speaks in a rather calm, enigmatic manner similar to other NPCs that seem self-aware of HEADSPACE's true purpose, such as the BRANCH CORAL from DEEPER WELL.

The KEEPER OF THE CASTLE is shown to be intrigued by the choices OMORI makes throughout the game, even pondering on what will happen if the latter decides to take up his offer.

STORY[]

The KEEPER OF THE CASTLE resides in the southwest wing of SWEETHEART'S CASTLE, in a passageway hidden by a blank-looking wall. Speaking to it at any point before ONE DAY LEFT simply causes it to provide exposition to SWEETHEART'S backstory and the origins of the castle.

Right outside of its lair, tagging OMORI as the leader and standing on the grate emitting red light for 9 seconds will result in the former being transported to a realm reminiscent of WHITE SPACE. It is titled Heaven in the game's data and a solemn BGM plays in the background. From there SOMETHING can be seen awaiting the player. Getting near SOMETHING causes it to slowly disappear, allowing OMORI to return to SWEETHEART'S CASTLE.

There is an alternative outcome exclusive to the OMORI ROUTE where, instead of going to WHITE SPACE, the player will be sent to an area resembling RED SPACE instead. It is titled Hell in the game's data. When doing so, the screen will instead darken before transitioning to that area. There, SUNNY is seen running away, after which OMORI will follow him before returning to the CASTLE.

On the OMORI Route, after OMORI has rebuilt HEADSPACE, the KEEPER has realized that SWEETHEART no longer calls the castle home. It turns to OMORI, and offers him the ability to take ownership of the castle. Accepting this offer completely erases SWEETHEART'S CASTLE and everything it contains, including ROCOCO, the LOST LIBRARY, and THE DUNGEON, replacing the entrance to one to a peaceful living room. This also awards the Welcome Home achievement.

  • In the game's data, the KEEPER OF THE CASTLE is referred to as Keeper.
Keeper of the Castle (Unused)
  • In the game's files, there are a set of unused sprites for the KEEPER OF THE CASTLE, having what appears to be a long, pointy tail. It is unknown why these sprites aren't used anywhere else in the game.
    • Despite being unused, one of the unused sprites for the KEEPER OF THE CASTLE is used for the Welcome Home achievement's icon.
  • The KEEPER OF THE CASTLE bears a resemblance to one of the SOMETHING-like enemies. However, any true connection between them is currently unknown.
  • According to the RPG Maker MV project, the event that plays when entering the areas reminiscent of WHITE SPACE and RED SPACE are respectively titled Heaven and Hell.
  • The KEEPER OF THE CASTLE uses the same sound effect as DADDY LONGLEGS.
