SPOILER WARNING
This article contains spoilers of important plot details regarding the plotline of OMORI.

A simulated version of MARI is an enemy exclusive to the console versions of OMORI. She serves as the final opponent of the special BOSS RUSH event that can be done with BASIL on ONE DAY LEFT of the OMORI ROUTE.

STORY

If the BOSS RUSH simulation was attempted at least once, the player has the option to interact with BASIL to initiate a special version of the event. From there, the group suggests that BASIL should try out the BOSS RUSH with OMORI as his partner for the entire run. Along with that, KEL secretly tells BOSS to program simulated versions of himself, AUBREY, and HERO into the event. Inspired by KEL's idea, MARI also tells BOSS to program a hologram of herself while keeping it a secret from everyone else besides KEL.

Once OMORI and BASIL manage to defeat the holograms of their three friends, their final opponent is none other than the hologram of MARI herself. Though she admits she isn't suited for battle, MARI reveals that she wanted to see how it would be like if she were in combat. The others on the screen cheer on the two as they engage in the final round of the event. The two proceed to fight the simulated MARI but once they manage to bring her down to 20% of her HEART, things take a sudden turn as the area around them distorts.

The two are then thrusted into a battle with SOMETHING swaying in the wind. In addition, OMORI can now use SUNNY's fear skills, which have no effect as he is now completely afraid, while BASIL stands unable to do anything out of fear. After four turns pass by, HELLMARI emerges from the darkness and lunges at the screen, automatically ending the battle. Shortly afterwards, OMORI and BASIL find themselves back in the lobby of the BOSS RUSH, likely due to the former resetting the simulation in an attempt to further repress the truth.

BASIL considers joining his friends in battle someday but quickly dismisses that thought as he thinks it won't happen anytime soon. If OMORI speaks to MARI afterwards, she questions her little brother on why he is looking at her so strangely before dismissing it. She then reassures OMORI that she will always take care of him as long as she is with him forever.

SKILLS

SKILL NOTES DAMAGE
MARI NOTHING MARI smiles at you.
  • Nothing happens
-
PICNIC BASKET MARI pulls out fresh fruit from her picnic basket.
  • You and your friends feel like new!
  • All targets' HEART and JUICE are fully restored.
-
SCARI MARI (No description)
  • The screen suddenly distorts as MARI changes into the HANGING BODY enemy.
  • This skill is automatically initiated once MARI's HEART is brought down to 20% or lower.
-

All of MARI's skills have no variance, likely due to none of them involving any damage to the targets selected and the fact she only heals them while smiling.

AI

SKILL BEHAVIOR
MARI will not physically harm OMORI and BASIL throughout the entire fight.

For the first, third, and fifth turns, MARI will do nothing but smile at you. For the second and fourth turns, MARI pulls out fresh fruit to fully restore OMORI and BASIL's HEART and JUICE.
From the sixth turn and onwards, MARI continues to do nothing but smile unless the player decides to damage her.

SKILL BEHAVIOR
Once MARI's HEART is lowered down to 20% or lower, she will then change into the HANGING BODY and does nothing but sway in the wind via BLURRY NOTHING.

This will also skip some of her scripted moves from the previous phase in the process if done before she can fully finish her moveset. Once four turns have passed by, HELLMARI emerges from the darkness to automatically end the fight.

TRIVIA

Simulation Mari (Placeholder)
  • There exists a draft placeholder image for MARI in the "Enemies" folder of the console version's files. This is the same with the other console-exclusive bosses.
  • In the game's files, MARI is referred to as simulation mari.
  • The BGM used for MARI's boss theme is a soft remix of her theme "By Your Side".
  • MARI is one of the few enemies that cannot physically harm the party, as she has no skills that involve attacking them. This trait is shared with the BIG STRONG TREE and GHOST BUNNY.
  • MARI's PICNIC BASKET skill uses the same healing effect when recovering at any of her picnic baskets.
  • MARI shares the same battle background with PERFECTHEART.
  • It is notable that MARI's defense stat is listed as 143, a likely nod to how she is associated with recurring number and its presumed meaning of "I love you."
    • In addition, when she is using her PICNIC BASKET skill, the color tone of the screen will temporarily be set to (143, 143, 143, 0).
Flower Crown (Special)
  • If BASIL uses the FLOWER CROWN skill against MARI, the textures of the vines will change into rope-like textures for a few frames before reverting back to normal. This is likely a nod to how BASIL hung MARI from a tree by using jump rope in the real world.
  • In the game's files, MARI originally had an unique defeat animation which showed her image heavily distorted with HELLMARI superimposed onto her. This animation was scrapped for unknown reasons.
  • The stats used for HANGING BODY phase are reused from the SOMETHING battle in the SUNNY ROUTE.
  • The battle sprites used for both SUNNY and BASIL's AFRAID portraits along with MARI being replaced with a hanging body is a twisted recreation of the boys turning around to see MARI's hanged corpse "staring" back at them in the past.
  • The energy bar that appears once MARI transforms into the HANGING BODY enemy is known as the Stressbar, and is directly reused from BASIL's boss fight in the SUNNY ROUTE. The ENERGY meter will always remain at the number it originally had and never goes up.
