PET ROCKS is a game mechanic exclusive to the FARAWAY TOWN segments, where the player and their PET ROCK team up and battle against other PET ROCK players. If SUNNY equips his PET ROCK as a CHARM, he can find players with PET ROCKS and challenge them.

OVERVIEW

An opponent who's ready to be challenged.

PET ROCKS is a minigame that the player can access outside of HEADSPACE inside the shop HOBBEEZ. It is accessed by talking to the SHOPKEEP and accepting his offer to sell you a pet rock for $10. After you have the pet rock, KEL will offer to battle you, and if you accept you enter the minigame for the first time.

While SUNNY is equipped with a PET ROCK, characters willing to battle you have a small rock icon above their head.

The actual battle is a game of Rock Paper Scissors. If you get consecutive wins on each round, your damage increases and only resets when you draw or lose. Be careful, because the same applies to your opponent. You will not be able to survive two consecutive attacks. Don't worry if you lose the match - you can repeatedly challenge opponents until you win.

Once you've battled at least four opponents around town, SHOPKEEP will tell you about the four veterans of PET ROCKS. This unlocks challenges against FIX-IT GUY, GLASSES MAN, and CUTE GIRL. Defeat them and SHOPKEEP will face you himself. Defeat him for a CD and to unlock the final challenge - against the PET ROCKS CHAMPION herself.

Completing the PET ROCKS minigame chain is necessary for two ACHIEVEMENTS - for beating the champion you become The Very Best and the NOSTALGIC CD you gained along the way is necessary for becoming a Music Connoisseur of Sorts.

*For LilG and OneWingAsh, there is an 1% chance that SUNNY always wins the turn, no matter which handsign was used before. The heart meter may become incorrect when this happens, as the 1% possibility is actually an oversight.

  • SUNNY's PET ROCK resembles a JASH, a cube-shaped vendor found throughout HEADSPACE.
  • KEL's PET ROCK resembles PLUTO, who is primarily found in OTHERWORLD.
  • KATIE's PET ROCK resembles one of the VEGGIE KIDS, TOMATOGIRL.
  • DAPHNE's PET ROCK resembles PAPA CHIP, who can found in ORANGE OASIS.
• The design of PEDRO's PET ROCK is a reference to the popular Cool S symbol.
• OTHERMART LADY's pet rock is a reference to Sephiroth, the main antagonist of the 1997 role-playing video game Final Fantasy VII. Both are final opponents with their most defining characteristic being a singular angelic wing.
• PET ROCKS in general is heavily inspired by the Pokémon franchise, with both Pokémon and PET ROCKS have the player going out and fighting people's creatures and becoming "the very best", with the main difference being in Pokémon you collect the other player's money, while in PET ROCKS you simply beat the opponent and move on to the next.
• The design of PET ROCK might be based off the Tamagotchi, a small virtual pet introduced in 1996. They both have a small screen and 3 buttons below it.
• There is a ~13.4% chance to beat OTHERMART LADY on a single try.
• It is possible to beat all PET ROCK players on a MIXED ROUTE, except for SAUCY-K and PAPA CHIP.
