SOMETHING IN THE WALLS, also known as FEAR OF SPIDERS and SPIDERS, is an enemy in OMORI and one of the various variants of SOMETHING that can be fought in-game.

PROFILE[]

SOMETHING IN THE WALLS appears as a large, black spider made out of a rock or clay-like material, similar to SOMETHING IN THE DARK. A grinning face is present on its abdomen, along with what seems to be a thread or stinger, with SOMETHING appearing to be its cephalothorax. Its legs have multiple white stripes.

STORY[]

SUNNY ROUTE[]

After SUNNY goes back home for the night during the first day, his house seems to be filled with spiders. After reaching the top of the stairs, SOMETHING briefly appears, which is then replaced by MARI. Suddenly, SOMETHING IN THE WALLS quickly crosses the screen, causing MARI to vanish. SUNNY then curls up on the stairs as SOMETHING IN THE WALLS descends on him, initiating the battle.

Like SOMETHING IN THE DARK, SUNNY'S attacks do no damage, his only option being to continuously CALM DOWN. Over the course of the fight, the mysterious voice will speak to him again, eventually reminding him how to FOCUS. Using FOCUS ends the battle, after which the environment will return to normal, and SUNNY will overcome his fear of spiders.

On the final night, during the fight with SOMETHING after destroying the lightbulb in WHITE SPACE, SOMETHING IN THE WALLS will appear again, being defeated the same way as in the first battle with it.

OMORI ROUTE[]

After SUNNY completes his chore of sweeping the house, he feels strange and begins to hallucinate. He gets transported into the same nightmare version of his house's staircase, and like in the SUNNY ROUTE he is forced to ascend it and confront his fear of spiders.

After saving BASIL in BLACK SPACE and resetting HEADSPACE, SOMETHING IN THE WALLS, now titled SPIDERS in the game's data, can be fought again in the LOST LIBRARY after bringing the SHEET MUSIC to the piano, this time it can be damaged. When defeated, OMORI will learn the skill CRIPPLE. Defeating it is necessary to obtain the Repressed achievement and enter BLACK SPACE 2.

AI[]

SKILL BEHAVIOR
For the first, fifth, and ninth turns, SOMETHING will launch its spider webs at SUNNY, decreasing his SPEED.

For the second, and sixth to seventh turns, SOMETHING will do nothing.

For the third, fourth, eighth, and tenth turns, SOMETHING will do a normal attack.

If the fight goes beyond ten turns and SUNNY hasn't used FOCUS, SOMETHING will continue to attack until SUNNY manages to use FOCUS to end the fight automatically.

SKILL NOTES BEHAVIOR
ATTACK SOMETHING sinks its fangs into _____. 25%
DO NOTHING SOMETHING is trying to talk to you... 15%
SPIN WEB SOMETHING shoots webs at _____! 20%
ATTACK ALL SOMETHING catches everyone! 100%

Every turn, each enemy will start by trying to use the skill listed at the top. If the calculation fails, they move on to the second skill and so on, until reaching the final skill which is guaranteed to activate. Each calculation is done independently from the previous ones, so the added percentage is not 100%.

STRATEGY[]

Like the previous SOMETHING fight, SUNNY will start the battle AFRAID and must endure SOMETHING IN THE WALLS's brutal attacks while using CALM DOWN to constantly heal himself and regain his NEUTRAL stats. It will occasionally attack SUNNY while doing nothing and using its webs to slow him down.

After two turns have passed, SUNNY will learn the FOCUS skill, in which using it automatically ends the fight. If the fight goes on longer than ten turns, then SOMETHING will keep attacking until the player uses FOCUS.

In the OMORI ROUTE, SOMETHING IN THE WALLS will work exactly the same as the other fear bosses in LOST LIBRARY. Unlike its kin, SOMETHING IN THE WALLS does not have any special mechanics, but it does have an extremely powerful attack that hits the whole party ("Something catches everyone") for brutal amounts of damage, which it will use on most turns. HERO should be spamming SNACK TIME, and it may be necessary for KEL to join in with a mass healing item if SOMETHING's damage output becomes too much.

Ways to increase the party's defense, like HERO's GATOR AID, or debuff SOMETHING's attack, like OMORI's VERTIGO (obtained by beating SOMETHING IN THE DARK) can also be useful. Beyond that, the party should mainly focus on lowering SOMETHING's defense while inflicting heavy hitting attacks such as OMORI's RED HANDS and AUBREY's BEATDOWN. The combo CAN'T CATCH ME (KEL) + DAZZLE (HERO) + VERTIGO (OMORI) + RAIN CLOUD (AUBREY) lowers SPIDERS' hit rate from 95% to 30%, ATTACK from 115 to 80.5 and gives to them EMOTIONAL disadvantage.

Mari's Advice (Something in the Walls)
???: This is getting nowhere fast... huh, SUNNY?
???: It seems like there's a lot going on...
???: You need to block out the little things... and figure out what's important!
You clear your mind... and remember how to FOCUS.
Mari's Advice (Unused)
???: It's hard to FOCUS when you're all riled up. Remember to take a deep breath...

TRIVIA[]

  • In-game, it is simply known as SOMETHING.
  • SOMETHING IN THE WALLS is the only FEAR boss to have an overworld sprite in-game.
  • The LOST LIBRARY variant of this enemy is referred as SPIDERS in the game's data.
  • There is an unused skill titled BABY SPIDER, where SOMETHING IN THE WALLS would create smaller variants of itself to attack the player. The enemy was scrapped but still exists in the game's coding and in the 2019 build of the game.
    • If used in-game, the text would read: "A spider egg hatches; A BABY SPIDER appeared."
  • SOMETHING IN THE WALLS' battle theme is named Arachnophobia, referencing SUNNY's likely irrational fear of spiders.
  • The color palette for the three fear scenarios and BASIL's boss fight was originally meant to be red and black. This was changed to a deep dark saturated blue as OMOCAT wanted to convey a sense of dread and despair.[1]
  • The battle background used for SOMETHING IN THE WALLS reveals a familiar looking tree outside of the window, foreshadowing a hint towards the game's backstory. This cannot be seen normally in regular gameplay.
  • In the game's data, SOMETHING IN THE WALLS is supposed to grant the player 10000 EXP and 1000 during its fight in LOST LIBRARY but this doesn't happen since the fight abruptly ends once the player defeats the entity.
  • After SOMETHING IN THE WALLS is defeated, a small spider can found at the spot where the enemy originally spawned. SUNNY can step on the spider, which causes it to vanish. If he chooses not to, the spider will remain there, only for the night on the SUNNY ROUTE and for every night on the OMORI ROUTE, until it is killed.
